Shamrocks Avenge Tri-County Loss to Grab Consolation

North Harrison avenged a loss to Tri-County earlier in the season, getting a 42-30 win to grab consolation. Camden Castleberry continued to play strong, getting 15 and 19 points in her last two games; she grabbed 9 boards as well. Emma Craig posted another double double with 13 points and 15 boards, and Jayliegh Robins had 6 assists.

Coach Aaron Long said the difference in the two games was that North Harrison kept their composure against Tri-County and their chaotic style of basketball. Previously, the Shamrocks lost their composure down the stretch after leading the whole way and gave up a costly offensive board in their 42-38 loss. But in Saturday’s game, they only gave up seven offensive boards and turned the ball over only 14 times, while holding Tri-County well under their scoring average of 47 points per game.

At first, it looked like it would be a long night for North Harrison, as Destiny Gutshall tried to take over the game for the Mustangs, scoring the first 10 points of the game for Tri-County in a span of five minutes. But North Harrison had been hitting most of their shots in warmups and it carried over onto the court, meaning they were in the lead by the time the storm passed over. Jayliegh Robins hit Camden Castleberry for three and hit Kami Gibson on a cut and grabbed a miss and put it back in to make it 7-3. Emma Craig connected a couple of times, but then Gutshall hit a 3-pointer and hit Carly Turner for another to put the Mustangs in front 13-11.

But then Jayliegh Robins hit Trendi Johnson in the high post, Emma Craig hit Camden Castleberry in transition, and Craig added two free throws to put North Harrison up 17-13. Somehow, without getting a single tip or steal in the first quarter, North Harrison was not run out of the gym and was ahead after one. For the rest of the game, Jayliegh Robins had a hand in Gutshall’s face, holding her to five points the rest of the way; Halle Morgan, who has been improving her play a lot the last two games, showed that she could guard her as well.

Camden Castleberry heated up in the second, hitting back to back jacks to put the Shamrocks up ten at 23-13, prompting a timeout. Tri-County started feeding their post player, Lucy Turner, and Gutshall added a steal to cut it to 23-18, but then North Harrison adjusted, holding them scoreless for the last 3:30 as Camden hit her third triple of the quarter and Jayliegh Robins hit Emma Craig inside to put the Shamrocks back up 28-18 at the half. Kami Gibson played lights-out defense on Turner the rest of the way, keeping her in front and not allowing an easy look or cut to the basket the rest of the way.

Tri-County put on their three quarters court press to start the second half, and they twice cut it to seven as Carly Turner got the hot hand for them. But they could not get any closer, as North Harrison continued to hold firm defensively, and Camden Castleberry hit a 3-pointer to put the Shamrocks back in front 34-24 after three as North Harrison once again held Tri-County scoreless for the last few minutes of the period.

Emma Craig’s putback put the Shamrocks up 36-24 to start the fourth, but then Gutshall hit an NBA 3-pointer to spark the blue shirts, and missed free throws helped them get back in the game. Thanks to four missed free throws from the seven minute mark to the two minute mark, Tri-County got to within 37-30 on Carly Turner’s third triple of the half and they had a chance to cut it to four or five. But Gutshall could not find the form she had in the first quarter, and after a missed 3-pointer that would have cut it to four, Camden Castleberry hit Kami Gibson in transition with 1:56 left to make it 39-30 to break the run.

On the next sequence, Tri-County missed a contested shot, Jayliegh Robins rebounded, and aired it out to Emma Craig racing down the floor. Despite two blue shirts draped all over her, Emma somehow came up with the ball, missed the layup, but Gutshall was hurt on the play and was done for the night.

After both sides exchanged turnovers, Tri-County had to foul, and Emma Craig hit two free throws with 53 seconds left and added another at the 33 second mark to clinch the game for North Harrison.

Camden Castleberry had 19 points for the Shamrocks. Emma Craig had 13, Kami Gibson 6, and Jayliegh Robins and Trendi Johnson 2.

Emma Craig had 15 boards to complete the double double. Jayliegh Robins and Camden Castleberry had 9 each, Kami Gibson 3, Halle Morgan 2, and Trendi Johnson 1.

Jayliegh Robins had 6 assists. Camden Castleberry, Kami Gibson, and Trendi Johnson had 2 each, and Emma Craig and Erin Virtue had 1 each.

Jayliegh Robins had 3 tips. Emma Craig and Camden Castleberry had 2, and Kami Gibson had 1.

Jayliegh Robins had 3 steals. Emma Craig had 2, and Halle Morgan, Camden Castleberry, Trendi Johnson, and Kami Gibson all had one.
