Study: Smoking Costs Missourians $1.7 Million Over a Lifetime

The website Wallet Hub on Wednesday released a study which showed that the financial cost of Missouri residents who smoked comes out to $1,702,848 over the average lifetime of a smoker. The out of pocket cost is $86,023; lost financial opportunities cost $959,049; healthcare costs cost $150,456; income loss is $496,014; and other costs add to $11,296. The total cost per year per smoker adds up to $35,476.

There are around 34.2 million tobacco users in the US. The economic and societal costs of smoking total more than $300 billion per year in the US, and smokers have an elevated risk of severe symptoms from the Coronavirus.
