Bluejay Boys Take Third at South Harrison Tournament Behind 34 Assists

Northeast Nodaway’s boys overcame being shorthanded along with horrific foul trouble and posted 34 assists in their 78-47 win over North Harrison Saturday. The Bluejays had beaten Tri-County by 11 and lost a close game to South Harrison. They only trailed 36-34 against the eventual tournament winners, but they had a bad third quarter and fell behind by as much as 18 before making a game of it before they had to start fouling; they fell 78-66.

North Harrison got off to a good start in the tournament with a 69-62 win over Maysville before falling 72-47 to Princeton. They had every right to expect a close game against the Bluejays, having beaten them last year in a close game and having lost in a close game the year before.

But the Bluejays got off to a fast start, scoring the first 12 points of the game. Ben Boswell cut inside and got a pass from Zach Pride, Boswell hit Auston Pride inside, Boswell got a putback, then Ben aired one out to Lane Dack, Pride hit a pair of free throws, and Boswell got loose in transition after blocking Brett Emig, and then got a feed from Colton Swalley.

Brandon Hamilton finally got North Harrison on the board by catching a carom and scoring, and Emig went coast to coast to cut it to 14-4. But then Zach Pride hit Ben Boswell inside, Pride hit Auston Pride in transition, Pride again connected with Boswell cutting inside, and then Lane Dack hit Ben Boswell on the left wing and he hit a 3-pointer with a hand in his face to make it 23-4.

Turnovers helped fuel Northeast Nodaway’s run as the Shamrocks turned it over seven times in the first quarter.

North Harrison took five out and put five in to start the second quarter, with the Shamrocks down 23-6. At first, nothing worked as Dylan McIntyre started getting loose, getting a fast break pass from Colton Swalley and adding two free throws to make it 27-6. McIntyre continued to have the hot hand in the second quarter, getting 10 points, but North Harrison was able to stop the bleeding as Brett Emig had six, and Wade Briggs got on the board with a 3-pointer. Late in the first half, Lane Dack and Auston Pride picked up their third fouls, but Northeast Nodaway maintained a 39-17 lead at the break.

The difference between the two teams was telling. While Northeast was sharing the ball at will, getting 16 assists for the half, North Harrison only had two.

The 22 point lead was shakier than it looked, as North Harrison has lit up the scoreboard in the past, and Northeast had only seven players and they were already in foul trouble.

The foul trouble got even worse to start the second half as Dylan McIntyre picked up his third foul and Lane Dack his fourth. On top of that, Wade Briggs started heating up for North Harrison, getting 13 points in the third period after being held to three in the first half. Despite all that, Northeast continued to pull away as Ben Boswell scored the first nine Bluejay points of the second half in a three minute span. Dylan McIntyre got loose in transition and got a pass from Zach Pride, Ben Boswell scored off a Pride steal, and somehow, despite the foul trouble, Northeast was up 52-21.

It got worse towards the end of the third quarter as Colton Swalley picked up his third foul and Dylan McIntyre his fourth. But North Harrison could only get back to within 60-33 by the end of the third quarter as they could not take advantage of the foul trouble.

Northeast began getting it into Auston Pride to start the fourth quarter, but Briggs remained hot for North Harrison, who got the deficit down to 65-41 after a putback from Nick Babinski. But then Northeast made another push as Lane Dack scored off a drive and Ben Boswell got a steal to set a new career high with 32 points as the game got into running clock territory at 73-43.

Little-used Brycen Kennard, pressed into service Saturday, got his reward at the end when he hit a 3-pointer to account for the final score.
