Camden Castleberry Hits 20 as Shamrocks Drop Grundy County

North Harrison’s girls recovered from a heartbreaking loss against Winston, in which the Redbirds hit a last-second three pointer to win 34-33, to play one of their better games of the year and take down Grundy County 52-15 Friday at Newtown-Harris, which coops with the Panthers.

Grundy had played Winston tough, losing by 16. But against North Harrison, they got into early foul trouble, and the Shamrocks used strong second and third quarters to pull away as Camden Castleberry had a career night and Emma Craig had a double double.

The game started off close in the first quarter as the Shamrocks played strong defensively, forcing a five seconds call, but turned the ball over in the period six of their 13 times and missed three free throws. But late in the period, with North Harrison leading 6-5, Erin Virtue hit Kami Gibson in the high post, and she converted it into a three point play and Halle Morgan kicked one out to Trendi Johnson on the right wing, and she hit it at the buzzer to make it 11-5.

The rest of the game was a clinic on ball movement and breaking down the defense. The area behind the basket is in play at Newtown-Harris, and Kami Gibson made good use of it; several of North Harrison’s baskets were set up by Kami making use of that area.

First, Kami got loose on the left baseline, got it to Jayliegh Robins, who hit Camden for three. Then, after Emma Craig kept a possession going, Kami took it herself down the left side and scored; Erin Virtue hit two free throws, Emma Craig converted a three point play after taking on four Grundy County defenders, Camden got loose in transition, and Emma scored off a pass from Kami Gibson after the Shamrocks kept another possession alive. By the time the dust had settled, North Harrison was in front 25-6 at the halftime.

Grundy made a concerted effort to get it into their posts to start the third quarter, but with North Harrison leading 30-10, another triple from Camden Castleberry sparked the Shamrocks again. Jayliegh Robins hit Kami Gibson in the high post. Then, Jayliegh Robins got a tip and steal, Camden missed the layup, but Emma Craig was there to clean up. Kami Gibson added a free throw to put North Harrison up 38-11 after three.

The Shamrocks continued to pull away in the fourth as Emma Craig scored twice from inside, Camden hit two 3-pointers, one from NBA range, Erin Virtue got loose on an inbounds play, and Jayliegh Robins drove the left baseline and scored.

Camden Castleberry had 20 points. Emma Craig had 14, Kami Gibson 8, Trendi Johnson and Erin Virtue, and Jayliegh Robins 2.

Emma Craig had 11 boards, Camden Castleberry and Kami Gibson 5, Erin Virtue 3, and Halle Morgan, Jayliegh Robins, and Trendi Johnson 1.
