Bob Prather, Tigers Downed Maryville for Albany Tournament Win

Worth County’s boys were known for their football prowess during the 1969-1970 season, but they were no slouches in basketball that year. From January 13th to 17th, 1970, they won the Albany Tournament that year, beating Albany, North Harrison, and Maryville in the process.

The Tigers had three big scorers in Bob Prather, Bill Gladstone Junior, and Bill Locke. Locke was out of the Albany game and the Tigers had to scramble against the host school Albany. During that time period, all of the GRC teams were solid, with few easy games on the schedule. Worth County held a narrow lead throughout the game, up 15-12 after one, 26-25 at the break, and 43-40 after three. But the Warriors fought back to force overtime and tie it at 55. Worth County fought back to get in front and get the 61-57 win. Bob Prather had 20 points, Bill Gladstone 14, Lynn Sheddrick 10, Leland Cook 9, Scott Houk 6, and Mike Swift 2.

They next played against North Harrison, which was only 13-16 that year, but which showed flashes of what they would become, as they beat South Harrison in the first round. That Shamrock team would go on to win 30 games in the 1971-72 season and make it all the way to state, where they got fourth place and won the Sportsmanship Award.

But on January 16th, 1970, it was Tigers all the way as they raced out to a 40-21 lead at the break and made it stand up with a 72-54 win with Locke back. Bill Gladstone had 19, Bob Prather 17, Bill Locke 14, Scott Houk 8, Leland Cook 7, Mike Swift 4, Barry McClellan 2, and Lynn Sheddrick 1.

That put them up against Maryville the next night, January 17th. Worth County jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead, only for Maryville to fight back and take a 26-25 halftime lead. But Worth County found their second wind and built their lead back up, going ahead by as much as nine. Maryville made another charge at the Tigers, but Worth County held them off at the free throw line, going 18 for 29 from the line.

Bob Prather had 18, Bill Gladstone 15, Bill Locke 14, Leland Cook with a career high with 11, Scott Houk 2, and Lynn Sheddrick 2. It was the first time Cook had hit double figures.
