North Nodaway’s girls started off the new year on a winning note despite playing shorthanded, down three players. Jacquelyn Cline and Lauren Herndon both had career nights and the Mustangs held off several charges by a rapidly improving West Nodaway squad to win 58-40 last Tuesday night. Cline had a career high with 25 points, and Herndon had 18 points and 14 boards.
The game started off slowly before Jacquelyn Cline went off on one of her huge scoring bursts, scoring eight points in a row to push the Mustangs to a 12-2 lead. She knocked down a couple of threes and added a shot from the high post. Reagan Hagey knocked one down for the Rockets, but Saryn Brown got a free throw, Cline scored her tenth point of the period, and Lauren Herndon scored the first two of her five 3-pointers to push the Mustangs to a 21-6 lead.
But then the Rockets showed that their strong showing against North Harrison and other opponents was no accident. Sydney Marriott showed rapid improvement over the week before, when she was pressed into service with no time to practice. She and Erin Cook formed a lightning quick guard duo to go with Reagan Hagey and Riley Linville in the post, and the Rockets started to come back.
It didn’t help that the Mustangs missed some chances at the free throw line; meanwhile, the Rockets were pushing the ball up the floor at will, getting to as close as 26-24 before Cline hit two free throws late to put North Nodaway up 28-24 at the half.
Linville picked up her fourth foul early in the third, and North Nodaway got a little more separation, but Hagey was still on the floor for much of the third quarter, and she was cleaning the glass at will.
Finally, Hagey picked up her fourth foul as well, and Lauren Herndon converted a traditional three point play after Angeline Parker, pressed into service, kept a possession alive with an offensive board to make it 39-33 after three. With both Rocket post players on the bench, Saryn Brown sliced through the defense and Lauren Herndon hit a 3-pointer to put North Nodaway back up double digits at 44-33 early in the fourth.
West Nodaway’s two bigs, Hagey and Linville, came back in at that point, and they made a push and got the lead down to eight twice. But then Lauren Herndon hit Jadon Dobbins for three, Lauren Herndon added a triple, and Jacquelyn Cline started one of her big scoring spurts by scoring off a drive to make it 54-38 with 3:06 left. Hagey cut it to 54-40, but then the Rockets had to start fouling and Cline was four for four in the final 55 seconds to seal the victory.
