The Nodaway County Tournament of 1951 and 1952

The Nodaway County Basketball Tournament of 1951-52 was held in Hopkins and Skidmore from November 26th through 30th, 1951. A program was posted in the Facebook group Parnell Remembered. Participants were Guilford, Ravenwood, Graham, Barnard, Hopkins, Pickering, Clearmont, Elmo, Burlington Junction (now West Nodaway), Parnell, Sheridan, Skidmore, Horace Mann, Quitman, and Jefferson.

Playing for Ravenwood were Claude Samson, Lloyd Adwell, Delbert Verbick, Willard Coffelt, Kenneth Ackley, Richard Coulter, Jim Martin, Richard Clark, Robert O’Banlon, and George Null. They were coached by Jim Wilkes. Like today, they wore blue and white, and they were known as the Bluejays.

Hopkins was coached by W.H. Cochrane. Players were Don Albright, George Campbell, Bob Carmichael, Floyd Hall, Bill Melvin, Bob Peve, Melvin Robinson, Leo Traster, Junior Ulmer, and Bob Whaley. Like today, they wore blue and white. They were known as the Bulldogs.

Pickering was coached by E.P. Shumate. For some reason, only the last names of the players were listed in the program. Players were Viestenz, Piearson, Pennington, Neely, Treese, Hackett, Parker, and Robbins. They were decked out in unfamiliar garb, as they wore black and green. They were known as the Ponies.

Clearmont was coached by Gerald Walker. Players were Merlin Kenagy, Jim Barcus, Rich Ferguson, Max Atwood, Richard New, Curtis Rupp, Blackford, Bill Humphrey, Don Hoyt, Garold Nuckolls, and Dallas Devine. They wore black and white and were known as the Tigers.

Parnell was coached by Larry Snapp and they were known as the Bombers. They wore red and white. Players were Leroy West, John Price, Richard Messner, Jim Surplus, Jack Mercer, Charles Roush, Burl Mullock, Art Hendrickson, Lawrence Nigh, and Marlin Clutter.

Sheridan was coached by Porter Tumy and they were known as the Bearcats. They wore blue and white. Players were Glen Dukes, Frank Hooker, Keith Hart, Roy Constant, Kenneth Woods, Paul Beezley, Donald Wall, Gary Cook, Don Hawk, and Don Randle.

The North Section was played at Hopkins, while the South Section was played at Skidmore. The North Section had Burlington Junction against Pickering, Elmo receiving a bye, Hopkins against Clearmont, and Parnell against Sheridan. In the South Section, Skidmore played Horace Mann, Quitman played Jefferson, Guilford played Ravenwood, and Graham played Barnard. All semifinals and finals were played in Hopkins. Officials were C.T. Baldwin, Darwin Williams, Harold Hull, and Charles Wiles.
