Worth County Uses 34 Point Second Quarter to Pull Away From King City

Worth County used a 34 point second quarter to pull away from King City and get an 84-31 win over the Wildkats Wednesday night in the second round of the Albany Tournament. The Tigers were coming off a 68-56 win over Stanberry, while King City showed some improvement over last year.

Worth County started off on a 12-2 run as Alex Rinehart had the hot hand for the Tigers, getting 5 points and adding a chasedown stuff. Tyler New and Aydan Gladstone added 3-pointers. King City started to fight back, getting some baskets late from Ty Mooney and Parker Muff to close to within 19-13. They got baskets from Mooney and Kystin Aborn to close to within 19-17, but for the rest of the period, everything Worth County threw up went in.

First, Aydan Gladstone hit a 3-pointer. Jackson Runde hit another and added a drive. Then, Alex Rinehart added a free throw and Grant Cameron added a steal to make it 30-17, forcing King City into a timeout.

But nothing changed as Jackson Runde got a steal and then Aydan Gladstone got a defensive board and aired it out to Alex Rinehart. Alex missed, but then Aydan showed he might challenge Eli Mullock’s track records next spring, as he sprinted all the way down the court and cleaned up on the play, getting the three point play. Grant Cameron got a finish after a Jackson Runde tip and steal, Alex Rinehart added a tipin and a 3-pointer, and King City burned another timeout in a futile effort to stop the run.

But Aydan Gladstone got a steal and fed Alex Rinehart, Lucas Wake got a steal and fed Jackson Runde for two free throws, Runde fed Gladstone inside for two, Alex Rinehart got loose inside, and then hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. By the time the dust had settled, Worth County was up 53-18 at the half, breaking up what had been a close game.

Worth County continued to pull away in the third quarter, starting with a 3-pointer from Aydan Gladstone. Jackson Runde hit another, Alex Rinehart jumped a pass and scored, and Grant Cameron fed Aydan Gladstone for a steal before Coach Les New began subbing freely for the rest of the game. Jackson Runde hit a couple of three pointers and Alex Rinehart scored a couple of times late as the Tigers led 73-24 after three.

Jace Cousatte got on the board with a 3-pointer, Grant Cameron scored off a John Galanakis steal, Tyler New scored four points in the period, and Lucas Wake added a putback for the Tigers.

Jackson Runde scored 24 for the Tigers. Alex Rinehart had 23, Aydan Gladstone 16, Tyler New 7, Grant Cameron 6, Jackson Smith and Jace Cousatte 3 each, and Lucas Wake 2.
