North Harrison Junior High Holds Off Albany

North Harrison’s junior high boys took a big lead Thursday in their final game of the season and then held off Albany’s attempts to rally, holding on for a 32-25 win.

The Shamrocks broke open a tight game in the first quarter, as Jerry Gilpatrick started feeding people the ball at will and added a drive and a baseline shot as they used a 10-0 run to jump out to a 16-4 lead after one.

The lead grew in the second as Kyler Kimbrough and Evan Schreiber each cut inside for baskets to make it 20-4. Keygun Johnson scored after Kolton Graham got a steal and aired it out to him, Karsyn Ury added another steal, and Schreiber added a free throw to make it 25-6.

But then Albany started chipping away, getting the last four points of the first half and scoring to start the second when Kyle Emerson’s shot banked home to make it 25-12. Ethan Henson’s third chance putback broke the run for the moment, but Albany kept coming as they figured out they could slash to the basket at will. They got as close as 27-19 late before Henson broke the run with a free throw; it was Henson who kept the Shamrocks afloat, as he had all 8 of his points in the second half, including five in the fourth quarter.

Henson hit from the high post to make it 30-19 to start the fourth, but Albany kept coming as they got a couple of steals to bring it back to within seven. But Henson hit a free throw with 1:33 left and Kolton Graham hit two as the Shamrocks got it back up to 35-25 with 44 seconds left.

Eight different Shamrocks got in the scoring column led by Henson, only a seventh grader, with 8. Evan Schreiber had 7, Keygun Johnson 6, Karsyn Ury and Jerry Gilpatrick 4, and Dustin Hamilton, Kyler Kimbrough, and Kolton Graham 2 each.
