EmiLee Brown Gets 14 as Tiger Girls Get First Win

Three Tigers got career highs as Worth County’s girls picked up their first win, 47-27 over Northeast Nodaway last Tuesday.

Previously, Worth County went 0-3 in the Albany Tournament. They fell 49-19 to Stanberry and then fell behind 14-4 to King City before fighting back to take the lead in the fourth quarter before losing by two, 37-35. They were then dropped 43-28 by Princeton. Worth County, with many players who had seen little or no action, showed flashes of their old form from the last four years, but nothing to show for it.

Coach Tiffany Bliley made an adjustment by going deeper into her bench, giving more minutes to Kara Staton, Elizabeth Brown, and Justina Wimer, both of whom played a valuable role in last Tuesday’s win; she went with a ten player rotation. The effort paid off, as Worth County was always able to keep fresh legs on the floor and keep their key players out of foul trouble.

They got career nights from three different players as EmiLee Brown had 14, going up against a much bigger Bluejay front line. Braidy Hunt had 12, and Justina Wimer had 9 for the Tigers.

For Northeast, they got their whole team for the first time as Jaden Atkins and Angela Standiford both played for the first time. They showed flashes of potential and had balanced scoring, but not enough of it. The Bluejays killed the Tigers on the boards early and won the turnover battle early, but as the game progressed, Worth County’s depth began to tell, and they were able to turn the tables in the trenches. By the time the dust had settled, Worth County had evened the turnover battle and had outrebounded the Bluejays 41-24.

Northeast won the rebounding battle and forced six Tiger turnovers while surrendering the ball only twice in the first quarter, but could not buy a bucket after getting a basket from Jill Boswell right off the bat. Meanwhile, Braidy Hunt had a putback and a 3-pointer off a Morgan Beagle kickout, EmiLee Brown scored in transition, and Justina Wimer added a 3-pointer to make it 10-2 after one.

The Bluejays finally started finding the range as Angela Standiford scored off a pass from Anne Schieber and Jill Boswell added a steal to make it 10-6. Worth County countered as Megan Cassavaugh got a three point play and Jill Hardy drove down the left side to make it 15-6. But then Cassy Redden hit Anne Schieber for three, Jaden Atkins hit a shot from the baseline, and Schieber hit a free throw to make it 15-12 before Cassavaugh’s drive at the end of the first half put Worth County in front 17-12.

Like the boys game, the Worth County girls turned it on in the third quarter, getting 7 from Hunt and 6 from Brown in the period. Jill Hardy hit Brown backdoor and Jill Hardy inbounded it to Hunt to make it 21-12. Cassy Redden countered for Northeast to make it 21-14, but then Brown scored twice more, Braidy Hunt hit a 3-pointer and beat the press for two more, and Megan Cassavaugh hit Kynah Steele to make it 32-14. Northeast tried to make a stand, but then Megan Cassavaugh hit Morgan Beagle for three to put Worth County’s margin at 20 at 38-18 after three.

The Bluejays tried to press to get back in the game, but then EmiLee Brown ran the floor well, getting behind the press twice to score. Justina Wimer hit her third triple of the night and Brown hit two free throws for the Tigers as they were able to keep their lead over 20 the rest of the way.
