North Nodaway’s girls got their second win in as many games Monday night, pulling away from a vastly improved Northeast Nodaway squad in the second half for the win. The Bluejays had previously lost 50-12 against Mercer, but the Cardinals are a contender for state this year, and the game did not show how much the team had improved.
Northeast handled the ball much better against North Nodaway’s attempts to force turnovers, rebounded much better than last year, and ran their offense much better. Anne Schieber is turning into a force for the Bluejays; she knocked down a 3-pointer to start the game and another at the buzzer to cut North Nodaway’s lead to 10-8 after the Mustangs, behind Jacquelyn Cline’s eight first quarter points, had threatened to pull away.
Once again, North Nodaway threatened to pull away in the second quarter, and once again, the Bluejays fought back. Lauren Herndon started off with a free throw for the Mustangs, Jacquelyn Cline scored off a steal, and Saylor Brown scored off a Jadon Dobbins steal to make it 15-8. But once again, the Bluejays fought back behind Schieber and a vastly improved front line. Cassy Redden showed that she had healed from a knee injury a year ago, and moved around much better and was a force on the boards, while Dalanie Auffert, only a freshman, brought some badly needed size to the squad. Anne Schieber scored off a drive at the buzzer to cut North Nodaway’s lead to 19-16.
North Nodaway made some adjustments coming out of the locker room as Saylor Brown faceguarded Schieber; when she got in foul trouble midway through the third quarter, Saryn Brown showed that she was just as effective as her older sister in locking down opposing shooters. The goal was to make someone else besides Schieber beat them.
Meanwhile, North Nodaway slowly began pulling away despite Northeast’s stingy defense. Jacquelyn Cline hit a 3-pointer; Auffert countered with a putback, but Cline drive into the teeth of the Bluejay front line and scored off a leaner. Jadon Dobbins went coast to coast after a defensive board and Saryn Brown scored off a drive to make it 28-18. Cassy Redden countered with two free throws, but Saryn Brown kicked out to Lauren Herndon at the buzzer to make it 31-20.
Jill Boswell countered with a basket to start the fourth, but North Nodaway got untracked in the fourth quarter as Jacquelyn Cline carried the team on her shoulders; she scored only three points, but assisted on all the others. First, she hit Lauren Herndon inside; then, she hit Kelsi Barcus on the left baseline, then scored off a drive. Cline then got one to Jadon Dobbins on a fast break and then hit a free throw at the end.
Jacquelyn Cline had 20 points for the Mustangs. Lauren Herndon had 6, Saylor Brown 5, Jadon Dobbins 4, Saryn Brown 3, and Kelsi Barcus 2.
