Jadon Dobbins had a career night for North Nodaway with 17 as North Nodaway’s girls found their second wind after losing the lead against Bedford and came out on top with a 47-39 win.
It looked like it would be a long night at first for the Mustangs; Bedford came into the game with the capability of lighting up the scoreboard, and they had a similar record at 2-1. Sure enough, they jumped out on top as Kennedy Weed knocked down a 3-pointer with a defender in her face and Kelly Weed hit an NBA 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 7-2.
But from there on out, Jadon Dobbins put the team on her shoulders, starting with a backdoor pass to Lauren Herndon in transition that resulted in free throws. Jacquelyn Cline hit a free throw, Saylor Brown got Dobbins the ball in transition, Cline knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing after a kickout from Lauren Herndon, and North Nodaway was back in front 10-7.
Kennedy Weed temporarily broke the run with a free throw, but then Jacquelyn Cline hit Saylor Brown for three and then Jadon Dobbins scored off a Saylor Brown steal to make it 15-8 before Macie Sefrit, the lightning quick point guard for Bedford, countered at the buzzer to make it 15-10 after one.
Hacking and fouling was a problem for North Nodaway all night, and Bedford used the free throw line to get back into the game, climbing back to within four at 19-15. But then Lauren Herndon inbounded to Jadon Dobbins at the top of the key, Saryn Brown hit a free throw, and Jacquelyn Cline hit two free throws to push it back up to ten at 25-15 with 1:41 left in the half.
But then Kennedy Weed hit an NBA 3-pointer to spark the Bulldogs again, and Vanessa Hill added a 3-pointer from the baseline as the Bulldogs came back to make it 25-22. Kelsi Barcus hit from the left side to make it five again, but then Macie Sefrit hit a free throw to make it 27-23 and then Kennedy Weed hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-26. As the hacking and fouling continued, Darcy Davis’ free throws gave Bedford the lead for the first time since the first quarter at 28-27.
Ellaina Renfro took a charge on defense, and Jadon Dobbins hit a 3-pointer to put the Mustangs back in front 31-30 to start the fourth, but then it looked like game over when Jacquelyn Cline picked up her fourth foul to start the fourth quarter. Sure enough, Kennedy Weed hit a 3-pointer, and Macie Sefrit hit an NBA 3-pointer to put Bedford up 37-33 with 6:09 left in the game.
But with Jacquelyn Cline on the bench, North Nodaway rallied to go back in front, starting with a drive by Saylor Brown down the right baseline. Jadon then rebounded a miss and drove, drawing a foul and hitting one of two from the line to cut it to one at 37-36. Dobbins then got a steal and converted to put North Nodaway back in front at 38-37. Saylor Brown then hit Lauren Herndon for three, Jadon Dobbins took a charge on defense, and then Jacquelyn Cline came back into the game and promptly drove and hit two free throws to make it 43-37.
North Nodaway then got a stop on defense, and then took a lot of time off the clock dribbling out the seconds as Bedford switched from zone to man in a frantic effort to get the ball back. But with 52 seconds left, Jadon Dobbins, who holds the single game record for assists at 14, set last year, hit Jacquelyn Cline cutting backdoor for the dagger to make it 45-37.
Darcy Davis got a steal and got the call on a charge/block situation and hit both free throws with 27 seconds left to make it 45-39, but then Jadon Dobbins hit a free throw to make it three possessions again at 46-39, and then Cline hit another at the end.
