Nine Tigers Score as Worth County Wins Second Straight

Nine different Tigers scored as Worth County’s girls won their second straight game Thursday, 51-40 over Mound City. The Tigers used a big run in the second half to break the game open as their superior depth told on the Panthers.

The Tigers started off well as Justina Wimer hit two 3-pointers early to stake the gold shirts out to a 9-4 lead. But Mound City began to make use of their size and speed; they are young, but they are seeking to replicate the boys squad, which is one of the top teams in the area. They fought back to tie it at 9-9. But then Worth County went back in front as Kynah Steele hit Jill Hardy for two, and then Kara Staton hit two free throws and knocked down a shot from the high post to make it 15-9 before the Panthers hit two free throws to cut it to four after one.

The teams traded buckets through most of the second in a chaotic quarter that saw both teams trying to run each other out of the gym. The Tigers continued to find the range in the period, but Mound City was getting to the line at will; they were already in the bonus after the first quarter. Worth County took a 29-23 lead into half.

Mound City scored off a drive to cut it to 31-25 early in the third, but the decisive run started after Braidy Hunt skipped one to Megan Cassavaugh for three to make it 34-25. Cassavaugh then aired one out to EmiLee Brown for two to make it 36-25, forcing Mound City into a timeout. But Brown converted an offensive glass into a free throw and Braidy Hunt got a steal and drive to make it 39-25 as Mound City burned another timeout. But Kynah Steele got consecutive putbacks and Morgan Beagle hit a free throw to make it 44-27 after three.

Mound City scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to get it back down to 12 at 44-32, but then Braidy Hunt jumped a pass and converted, Worth County forced a five seconds call on defense, and Hunt scored again after EmiLee Brown skipped her a pass to make it 48-32. Mound City got the deficit back to 48-35 on the line, but Kynah Steele drove and kicked to Taylor Sanders for three for the dagger with 1:17 left.
