Emma Craig Breaks Out, Shamrock Girls Win Second

Emma Craig showed signs of breaking out in the 37-32 loss to Nodaway-Holt Friday, January 3rd, and she carried the Shamrocks on her shoulders Tuesday as they got their second win of the season, a 44-31 win over Winston. The Redbirds had won three games, but were mired in a slump as well, having lost three one-sided games in a row, to Meadville, Schuyler County, and Pattonsburg.

North Harrison had not scored more than 34 points in any game this year, but finally started finding the range in the first quarter as Emma Craig scored five points, working the inside at will, while Camden Castleberry and Jayliegh Robins both hit 3-pointers. North Harrison led 11-2 after one.

But then Winston switched to a man to man in the second, and North Harrison was not ready for it, turning it over eight times in the quarter, and hacking and fouling on defense. The Redbirds chipped away and came as close as two. Camden Castleberry kept the Shamrocks afloat in the period, getting all four North Harrison points, including one play where Rainey Fordyce got a tip and she converted a steal at the other end. North Harrison led 15-12 at the half.

The focus of the second half was for North Harrison to take better care of the ball and to cut down on their fouls; out of their 12 points, Winston had 8 from the line.

The Shamrocks settled down in the third quarter, getting the ball in twice to Emma Craig. Kami Gibson chipped in with a backdoor layup and a free throw, Carly Rinehart cut inside and got a basket, Emma scored off a drive, and Camden Castleberry hit a 3-pointer as the green shirts got the lead back up to double digits at 29-19.

With both teams desperate for a win, everything got frantic in the fourth. Winston twice cut it to eight early as Abby Rhoades had a 3-pointer and then Emma Heldenbrand hit a pair of free throws to make it 34-26. But Emma Craig carried the team on her back, scoring nine points in the last 3:37 and 11 in the fourth quarter, hitting three for three from the line as the Shamrocks pulled away to their 13 point margin at the end.

Emma Craig had 22 for the Shamrocks. Camden Castleberry had 11, Kami Gibson and Carly Rinehart had 4, and Jayliegh Robins had 3.

Emma Craig had 18 rebounds. Kami Gibson had 10, Carly Rinehart 5, Camden Castleberry 3, and Sarah Clawson and Jayliegh Robins each had 1. North Harrison rebounded much better than they did in the Tina-Avalon game, when they couldn't buy any second chance points against the Dragons.

Emma Craig had 3 assists. Camden Castleberry and Kami Gibson had 2, and Rainey Fordyce, Jayliegh Robins, and Carly Rinehart had 1.

Camden Castleberry had 6 tips. Emma Craig had 5, Kami GIbson 3, Carly Rinehart 2, and Rainey Fordyce 1.

Emma Craig had 5 steals. Camden Castleberry had 4, Jayliegh Robins 2, and Sarah Clawson and Rainey Fordyce 1 each.
