He was united in marriage to Virginia “Ginny” Kaye Elmer on August 30, 1975, at the Redding Methodist Church. Bill was blessed with two daughters Rebecca Mae (1978) and Carrie Dawn (1982). In 1981, he moved to a little piece of paradise; the family farm just south of Delphos, Iowa, where Bill had grown up and shared many memories with his brothers and cousins. Bill enjoyed a rewarding, independent, and fulfilling lifestyle as a farmer. He was always a caretaker to anyone in his life, including the animals and the land. Bill worked a second job for a short time in the early nineties as a maintenance man at the Mt Ayr Post Office, having to punch a time clock was not Bill’s style and his passion was working the land and raising beef cattle.
Bill had several hobbies, he enjoyed mini-rod tractor pulling and mud running, earning several stories and a few trophies with his adventures. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, attending auctions, watching the Kansas City Royals, going to farm shows and making memories with friends and family. Relationships with other people were very important to him. Bill’s honest, genuine, friendly demeanor formed strong friendships with multitudes of people; those he loved as family, those he lent a hand, and those he shared a big smile and a hearty laugh. Bill would find the best in anyone and the best in every day. While Bill’s faith in God was private, his belief in eternal life and the power of prayer was unshakeable. Bill was a proud member of Masonic Faith Lodge #179.
In 2004, Bryson Paul Smith, the first of 4 grandsons entered the world, followed in the next few years by Louden James Main, Kaden Russell Smith and Calvin Keith Main, allowing the greatest blessing in Bill’s life as Pa Bill. Grandpa is so proud of these fine young men who carry many of Bill’s beautiful traits. Bill always took time to spend with the grandsons, attending activities, sporting events, and showing them how to have fun, even if it was while getting a job done.
Bill was a very special person with the gift of life and he truly lived every minute of every day. Bill replaced the pain and suffering of cancer with the love from all the special people in his life on Earth for a glorious reunion with his maker on January 7, 2020. He is reunited with friends and family preceding him in death; grandparents Carl and Fern (Jarvis) Quick and Paul and Sybil (Carroll) Morin; parents-in-law Henry and Maggie Mae (Johnson) Elmer; brothers-in-law Mark Elmer and Merlyn Mathany.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ginny of Redding; daughters Rebecca (Cliff) Smith of Adel and Carrie (Wiley) Main of Mount Ayr; grandsons Bryson and Kaden Smith of Adel and Louden and Calvin Main of Mount Ayr; parents Kenneth and Berta Quick of Redding; brothers Danny (Kathy) Quick of Redding, Jeff (Rhonda) Quick of Redding and Bruce (Kris) Quick of Tingley; brothers-in-law Richard (Lisa) Elmer of Mount Ayr and James (Kristine) Elmer of California; sisters-in-law Phyllis Mathany of Carlisle and Elaine (Vance) Briner of Agency, Iowa. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
