Steven Willhite completed 33 of his 51 passing attempts for 617 yards and 12 scores. The Tigers contained Willhite much better than they did last year, when he hurt them with his legs as well as his arm. But Patrick Cowley and Dakota Eaton had huge nights again, while Brett Emig’s return and Kaden Koch’s steady play helped as well.
The field has a lot of parity this year, as there are only three undefeated teams left and only five teams with one or fewer losses.
#2 East Atchison 62, Stewartsville 0 – East Atchison remains one of three teams that are unbeaten, along with Pattonsburg and Appleton City. They got a breather against Stewartsville, ending this one at halftime. Jake McEnaney was 12 for 13 for 156 yards. Briacin Bywater had 8 carries for 72 yards for the Wolves. Kaylin Merriweather had 3 catches for 70 yards, while Ian Hedlund had 3 catches for 52 yards and Austin Anderson 1 catch for 42 yards.
#3 Southwest Livingston 62, Rock Port 12 – Rock Port had a promising start to the season, but while they held Mack Anderson to 74 yards passing, he ran wild on the ground, with eight touchdowns and 17 carries for 333 yards. This includes a 71 yard score. Balazs Sturgeon had 8 tackles, while Mack Anderson had 6, Jaeden Sears 5, and Dagun Bassett 4.
#4 Appleton City 84, Osceola 36 – Appleton City remains unbeaten for the year, while Osceola, after a promising 3-0 start, has dropped three out of its last four games.
#5 North Shelby 22, Stanberry 16 – North Shelby continues to impress, raising their record to 6-1, while Stanberry showed some improvement despite the loss. North Shelby went into the fourth quarter up 22-0, but then Stanberry had a frantic rally, getting to within 22-16 with 49 seconds left to go. But North Shelby held on for the win.
The Raiders will be Pattonsburg’s next opponent Friday, and they are the exact opposite from the Panthers. They attempted 50 running plays Friday and only one passing play. Dayton Mettes had 24 carries for 181 yards, while Ethan Geisendorfer had 16 carries for 76 yards. He had 22 carries for 304 yards in an earlier game against Norborne/Hardin-Central. Elijah Greenwell had 10 carries for 67 yards.
Offensively, Pattonsburg will have to block Kyle Smith if they are to have success. He had 17 tackles against Stanberry, while Carson Mesmer had 9, and Geisendorfer had 7.
#7 Mound City 46, South/Nodaway-Holt 0 – The Spartans had given Mound City fits last year when the two teams met, but this time, Mound City had a good bounce-back win after dropping their 58-50 heartbreaker to East Atchison the week before.
Rich Hill 32, #8 Drexel 6 – Rich Hill’s strong showing against Pattonsburg in the first half the week before was no accident, as they slowly pulled away from Drexel to get the win. Drexel, with only two losses on the year, remains in despite the loss.
#9 Orrick 66, K.C. East (KS) 38 – Normally a doormat, K.C. East put up a good fight, but Blake Buchanan, who missed the Worth County game, came back to lead the Bearcats to a win. He was 5 for 12 for 125 yards, and ran 20 times for another 138 yards. Blake McAfee had 20 carries for 84 yards.
#10 North Andrew 68, Albany 32 – North Andrew was up 38-6 at the half and rolled to the win. They had 53 carries for 493 yards. Jaden Baker with 15 carries for 152 yards. Carson Thomas had 12 carries for 156 yards, Hayden Ecker had 12 carries for 87 yards, Brayden Brincks had 7 carries for 78 yards.
North Andrew visits Worth County this Friday. In order to move the ball against the Cardinals, Worth County will have to block Clayton Linville, who had 20 tackles and five tackles for loss against Albany. Other defenders to watch include Jaden Baker (12 tackles), Brayden Brincks (10 tackles, 3 for loss), and McKinley Lillard (10 tackles). North Andrew had 14 tackles for loss against Albany.
Ball security will be another goal for Worth County; for the third week in a row, they will go up against a team that is good at taking away the ball. North Andrew forced four Albany fumbles to only one for themselves.
Liberal is also at 5-2 this year, and also in their first year of eight man football. Four State Homepage, a website which covers the southwest corner of the state, reported that they had pulled the trigger when only 13 players committed to playing this fall. They cited the need to have a JV schedule to help develop their players.
