Baylie Busby Hangs 22 Points,10 Steals on North Nodaway as NEN Junior High Girls Win Third Straight

Baylie Busby hung 22 points and 10 steals on North Nodaway Tuesday night as the NEN Junior High squad won its third straight after dropping its first game against King City. They won 29-17 over North Nodaway.

The game started off as a defensive standoff, as both sides had trouble bringing the ball up against the other team’s pressure. Jill Boswell’s shot at the buzzer broke a 3-3 tie and put the Bluejays in front after one, but then Saryn Brown converted a three point play after a fast break look from Lauren Herndon to put the Mustangs in front 6-5 at the start of the second. The two-headed monster of Herndon and Brown looked like it would be a formidable challenge for the Bluejays.

But all of a sudden, Baylie Busby started channeling her aunt Natalie and started slicing through the blue shirts like they weren’t even there, putting up 10 points in the quarter as the Bluejays took control of the game. She sliced through the Mustang defenders to put her team up 7-6, knocked down a couple of outside shots, and then posted up inside and scored off a pass from Dalanie Auffert to make it 13-6. Saryn Brown’s triple cut it to 13-9, but Baylie went coast to coast in transition and put the Bluejays up 15-9 at the half.

Busby scored inside twice, and Dalanie Auffert added another basket as the Bluejays went up 21-11 after three. Busby, who picked the wallets of the Mustang players all night, got a steal and a free throw with 3:12 left to make it 23-11. Saryn Brown scored off a drive, but Busby countered with one of her own with 1:59 left to make it 25-13.

But Brown and Herndon would not stay down forever, and the Mustangs went for a miracle finish as Brown hit two free throws and Lauren Herndon got a steal off the press to make it 25-17. The Mustangs got another steal, but Saryn Brown missed a good look at a 3-pointer and Dalanie Auffert got the defensive board after a mad scramble. Lindsey Jackson inbounded to Auffert on the other end, and she connected to make it 27-17, and Busby finally picked North Nodaway’s wallet for her tenth steal and took it in for a layup for the final score.
