Week Eight Football Rankings

#1 East Atchison 80, Stanberry 12 – Just as Stanberry looked like it was about to turn the corner, they ran into a brick wall. East Atchison is now one of only two undefeated teams left in eight man football with Pattonsburg’s 92-88 loss to North Shelby.  East Atchison’s week one win over Southwest is looking pretty impressive at this point.

The Wolves had “only” 400 yards, as they had a lot of short fields to work with. They had four fumble recoveries and three picks. Jake McEnaney had 11 carries for 124 yards, Kaylin Merriweather had 4 carries for 68 yards, and Briacin Bywater had 11 carries for 66 yards. McEnaney threw for 84 yards. Merriweather had 15 tackles. Stanberry hung tough with the Wolves through one quarter, only trailing 22-12, only for East Atchison to take control with 20 in the second and 32 for the third.

#2 Southwest Livingston 64, North/West Nodaway 14 – North/West Nodaway continued to show improvement even though the score didn’t show it, but they didn’t have an answer for Mack Anderson, who had 9 carries for over 200 yards for the Wildcats.

#3 Appleton City 46, Liberal 20 – Appleton City is one of two undefeated teams left after turning back Liberal Friday.

#4 North Shelby 92, #5 Pattonsburg 88 – This was one game that shook up the rankings this week. North Shelby is the real deal, and their line play was instrumental in Friday’s win. Pattonsburg nearly pulled this one out after being down by as much as 26 at one point. The game set a state record for most combined points in a game with 180. This is for both eight man and 11 man. The single game scoring record in eight man of 106 points, set by South/Nodaway-Holt in 2015, is still intact.

The game looked like a normal game going into the fourth quarter, with North Shelby up 60-34. But then both teams started scoring at a frantic pace, with Pattonsburg putting up 54 points and North Shelby 32.

#6 Mound City 50, DeKalb 12 – Mound City won again although DeKalb went the distance this time.

#7 Drexel 54, Chilhowee 14 – Drexel got back on the winning track this week; Chilhowee hung tough in the first half, but Drexel pulled away in the second.

For Drexel, Jacob Coffey had 21 carries for 186 yards. Adam Gilbert had 6 carries for 127 yards, and Cory Cumpton had 7 carries for 51 yards and added a punt return. Gilbert had 10 tackles. They key for the game was in rushing yards; while Drexel got over 400 rushing yards for the game, they held Chilhowee to negative rushing yards. Out of 56 plays run by Chilhowee, 19 went for losses. Drexel had six sacks for the night.

#8 Orrick 72, Osceola 18 – Orrick unloaded on Osceola in the first quarter, hanging 44 unanswered points on them in the win. Blake Buchanan had another big night, getting 12 carries for 243 yards, over 20 yards a carry. Blake McAfee added 15 carries for 121 yards.

#9 North Andrew 86, #10 Worth County 46 – This is the other game that shook up the rankings this week. North Andrew was still finding their way last year under a new coach and a new system. But this year, they hit full throttle as they outplayed Worth County for the win. There are now only nine teams left with two losses after Worth County and Liberal dropped their games this week.
