Worth County had every reason to expect a tough game in their second meeting with North Nodaway on the girls side. The Mustangs had played Worth County tough the first time, they always play well at home, and there was the revenge factor to consider. The Mustangs had been playing excellent basketball lately, coming into the game having won 11 of their last 15 after starting off 2-5. But it was Worth County who got off to the hot start this time and came way with the 52-36 victory Wednesday night.
The game was moved back one night due to inclement weather, and the winner would be the team that made the best use of its night off. Neither team was able to practice. Ashley Thompson scored from inside to start the game, but then it was Regan Allee who got the hot hand for Worth County knocking down three triples in succession as Kristin New and Jessi Badell were getting her the ball. Kaylee McElvain added a free throw after Kristin New skipped her one diagonally from the half court and Worth County was up 10-2 at the 3:11 mark.
Anna Gladstone had her second foul and Alisha Davison’s three point play and Kristin Herndon’s putback made it 12-7, but then Kaylee McElvain scored off a free throw, Kristin New got a tip and steal that led to another, and Kaylee McElvain got loose after Regan Allee got a tip, Jill Hardy got a steal, and Kristin New pushed the ball up the floor to McElvain for the finish to make it 16-7.
Worth County was beating North Nodaway up and down the floor, while it didn’t help that North Nodaway was 1 for 5 from the line.
Alisha Davison’s triple made it 20-13 at the 3:15 mark, but then Anna Gladstone scored off a Megan Cassavaugh steal, Regan Allee got a steal and pulled up and scored from the high post, and Kaylee McElvain scored from the left side after Anna Gladstone connected with her from the high post to make it 26-13 with 1:55 left.
Kristin Herndon scored from the high post for North Nodaway, but Kaylee McElvain got loose on the boards and Megan Cassavaugh hit Regan Allee for a triple despite the box and one on her after the first few minutes of the game to make it 31-15 at the half. It didn’t help that North Nodaway threw the ball away 15 times, while Worth County only surrendered the ball 7 times at the half.
Anna Gladstone knocked one down from the high post after a pass from Jessi Badell to start the second half and then aired one out to Kristin New to make it 35-15. North Nodaway tried to rally as Audrey Trimble, who had been scoreless, hit a 3-pointer and Ashley Thompson scored an inside shot and added a free throw to make it 37-21. But then Jill Hardy came off the bench to score from the baseline and add a putback. Kaylee McElvain cut inside and got a pass from Kristin New, while New got a three point play off a Jill Hardy steal to make it 46-21. Ashley Thompson broke the run for North Nodaway, but Regan Allee hit two free throws to make it 48-23 after three.
But then North Nodaway made every effort to make an improbable comeback in the fourth, getting as close as 12. Fueled by three missed free throws by Worth County, Kristin Herndon cut inside and got a pass from Kandace Damgar, Damgar got a putback, and Keagan O’Riley hit a guarded three to make it 48-30. Worth County burned a timeout, but then Emma Hart got open twice and Audrey Trimble added a steal to make it 48-36, as the Mustangs were on the point of making a game of it with 3:09 left.
North Nodaway had some chances to get it to 9 or 10, but Worth County settled down and ran their delay game, forcing North Nodaway to foul at the 1:20 mark. Kristin New was 4 for 4 from the line for Worth County to preserve the win. She was 6 for 7 from the line for the Tigers.
For Worth County, Regan Allee had 16 and Kaylee McElvain 14, playing one of her best games of the year. Kristin New had 10, and Anna Gladstone and Jill Hardy had 6 each.
Kaylee McElvain had 1 block for Worth County.
Anna Gladstone had 5 boards for Worth County. Kristin New, Kaylee McElvain, and Jill Hardy had 4 each, Jessi Badell and Regan Allee had 3, and Megan Cassavaugh had 1.
Kristin New had 7 assists for the Tigers. Jill Hardy had 4, Megan Cassavaugh and Anna Gladstone had 2, and Merrideth Spiers and Regan Allee had 1 each.
Kristin New had 10 tips for Worth County. Regan Allee had 9, Kaylee McElvain 3, Anna Gladstone 2, and Jill Hardy, Merrideth Spiers, Jessi Badell, and Haley Hunt had 1 each.
Kristin New had 7 steals for Worth County. Jill Hardy and Regan Allee had 3, Anna Gladstone 2, and Kaylee McElvain, Megan Cassavaugh, and Jessi Badell had 1.
For North Nodaway, Ashley Thompson had 10, Alisha Davison and Kristin Herndon 6, Audrey Trimble 5, Emma Hart 4, Keagan O’Riley 3, and Kandace Damgar 2.
Ashley Thompson had 8 blocks for the Mustangs, two nights after she got 7 against Osborn. Kristin Herndon and Keagan O’Riley had 1.
Ashley Thompson did all she could in the game, grabbing 16 boards for her team, a career high. Kristin Herndon had 6, Kandace Damgar 3, and Keagan O’Riley and Audrey Trimble 1.
Audrey Trimble had 4 assists for the Mustangs. Keagan O’Riley had 3, Kandace Damgar and Kristin Herndon 2 each, and Ashley Thompson 1.
Kristin Herndon had 5 tips for North Nodaway, while Keagan O’Riley, Kandace Damgar, Emma Hart, and Audrey Trimble had 1 each.
Kristin Herndon and Audrey Trimble had 3 steals for North Nodaway. Emma Hart and Keagan O’Riley had 1 each.
