Jill Hardy Posts Career High as Tiger Girls Down NEN

Jill Hardy posted a career high with 12, Merrideth Spiers had a career high with 5 boards, and Worth County’s girls were all over the passing lanes against Northeast Nodaway, downing them 53-40.

Worth County outrebounded NEN 33-26, but the big difference between the teams was the turnover battle; Worth County only turned the ball over seven times against the relentless pressure of Paige West and Makayla Adwell, while NEN turned the ball over 15 times against Worth County. Just as importantly, Worth County got 47 tips for the night, meaning Northeast was never able to get in a rhythm offensively until the fourth quarter; NEN only got 16 tips against Worth County.

Makayla Adwell scored the first five points of the game for NEN, which led 5-3 at the 3:55 mark. But then Kaylee McElvain got a drive off a pass from Kristin New, Anna Gladstone got in transition after a Jessi Badell steal and hit Regan Allee for three, and Worth County was off and running.

Madelynn Mattson made one of two from the line, forcing McElvain to the bench with two fouls, but Jill Hardy and Merrideth Spiers both came off the bench to hold down the fort. Kristin New skipped one to Badell on the right wing, Regan Allee hit Kristin New in transition, New hit Jill Hardy on the left wing, and Jessi Badell got loose inside, once again off a pass from New to make it 16-6 before Gerry Runde’s NBA triple made it 16-9.

Makayla Adwell’s steal and free throw made it 16-10, but then Jessi Badell scored off an errant pass that caromed right at her for an easy basket. As Paige West and Madelynn Mattson picked up their second fouls, Worth County began to pull away as Kaylee McElvain scored off a drive with 2:50 left after the score was stuck at 18-10 for three minutes.

Madelynn Mattson scored after Gerry Runde set her up with a drive down the right side, but then Kristin New hit Regan Allee for her third three of the night to make it 23-12. Worth County took a 27-17 lead into the locker.

Against North Harrison, Runde shot NEN back into the game in the third quarter in Gilman City, but Northeast was snakebit in the third against Worth County and Adwell picked up her third foul.

Despite facing a triangle and two, both Anna Gladstone and Regan Allee chipped in as Worth County continued to pull away. Jessi Badell hit Merrideth Spiers inside, Badell added a putback, Regan Allee and Anna Gladstone both scored in transition, and Gladstone hit a free throw to make it 36-19. Worth County led 38-22 after three.

Adwell tried to get Northeast going with a rare three to start the fourth, but Hardy answered with one of her own. Adwell sliced down the baseline to cut it to 41-27, but Hardy hit another three and Kaylee McElvain got loose in transition to give Worth County its biggest lead of the night at 46-27.

Runde finally got going, getting set up twice by Paige West’s passing, but Northeast never got closer than the final score. Both she and Adwell had 8 in the final period, but Worth County played one of their better games of the year to secure the win. There was a scary moment at the end, however, when Anna Gladstone, trying to guard against NEN’s frantic efforts to pull off a miracle in the last minute of the game, crumpled to the floor with a sprained ankle.
