Gerry Runde Hits 22; Paige West Wreaks Defensive Havoc as NEN Girls Top Osborn

Northeast Nodaway’s girls clinched a winning season Friday, beating Osborn 49-40 in a game that was not as close as the final score. Gerry Runde scored 22 points for Northeast, while Paige West wreaked havoc on the defensive end, getting 15 tips. Makayla Adwell got 11 as Osborn was never able to get into their offense until NEN began subbing freely in the last three minutes of the game. The Bluejays were able to recover from a six-win season last year and have now doubled their win total.

Osborn is a young team that is much improved from last year. They had been playing well, having won four out of their last six and were fighting for a winning season. A win would have evened their record out at 10-10, a vast improvement over recent years, and they would have been in good position to finish at .500. As things stand now, they have their work cut out for them as they still have a road trip to Mound City and a district meeting with a solid St. Joseph Christian squad. Their last winning season was in 2009-2010.

NEN got off to a fast start as Gerry Runde hit a triple from the right side off a pass from Makayla Adwell, Adwell hit from the high post, Blair Stoll hit Madelynn Mattson inside for a three point play, and Mattson got a putback to make it 10-0. Osborn tried to put on a press to slow down NEN, something they didn’t do against North Nodaway. They got it back to 13-5 on Olivia Dierenfeldt’s triple after one, but Mattson’s offensive board led to a free throw, Runde hit after Cassy Redden kept a possession alive with another offensive glass, and Makayla Adwell went backdoor after Runde bulldozed her way down the baseline to to make it 18-5. Northeast rebounded much better against the Wildcats, getting 33 for the night. That was over double their total in the South Nodaway loss previously.

All this time, Osborn was trying to figure out how to work around Paige West, who was always getting in the passing lanes and disrupting things along with Adwell. West had six of her tips in the first 3½ minutes of the second, while Adwell added a pair of steals. They burned a timeout, but West hit Runde for three and Runde got loose after the Osborn defense had collapsed on Mattson to make it 23-5 with 5:11 left in the second.

Northeast kept Osborn hanging around the rest of the first half with too much hacking and fouling, putting Osborn in the double bonus. They were able to keep it at double digits as Gerry Runde stayed out of foul trouble after sitting much of the South Nodaway game, Angela Standiford chipped in off the bench with a free throw and an inside shot, and Blair Stoll hit a triple. NEN led 31-15 at the break.

Brionna Frans’ basket cut it to 31-17 early in the second, but Makayla Adwell took over the third quarter, getting two free throws and getting loose after Paige West had secured a long rebound. She then hit Madelynn Mattson inside and Gerry Runde in transition to give NEN its biggest lead of 39-17 with 3:18 left. Osborn didn’t get under double digits until 13.8 seconds were left against Northeast’s reserves.

Gerry Runde had 22 points to lead Northeast. Makayla Adwell had 11, Madelynn Mattson 10, Blair Stoll 3, and Angela Standiford 3.

Angela Standiford, Madelynn Mattson, Gerry Runde, and Anne Schieber all had 1 block.
