Wednesday night saw the scripts flipped as it was the Worth County girls who won handily over North Nodaway, while the boys had to fight for their lives against the six-win Mustangs. The Mustangs had been playing better ball lately, giving East Atchison all they could handle. But what transpired exceeded all expectations as they somehow stayed with Worth County despite being outplayed on the floor. The Tigers outplayed North Nodaway in every statistical category, getting 22 boards to 16 for North Nodaway, 14 assists to 11 for the Mustangs, 20 tips to 6 for North Nodaway, and 13 steals to North Nodaway’s 7. Yet North Nodaway was right there until the end before Worth County got the 56-53 victory.
North Nodaway had every reason to be worried, as they were coming into the game shorthanded, without Austin Bird (flu). But it didn’t matter at first, as Ryan Riley knocked down two threes, Cody Wood one, and Tyler Bix added a free throw to make it 10-6.
But then it looked like Worth County would pull away as Cade Allee got a steal, Ryan McClellan got a triple after a Mason Hawk kickout, Drake Kinsella cut inside for a basket, Ryan scored off a steal, Cade Allee hit a 3-pointer from the left sing, and Ryan McClellan hit a 30-footer after taking an inbounds pass from Drake Kinsella three fourths of the length of the court.
North Nodaway would answer back to start the second as Ryan Riley connected for three, Cody Wood scored off a drive and added an NBA three out of nowhere, and Arron Coleman hit a three pointer from the top of the key. All of a sudden, the Mustangs, who had been making 5-10 threes a night lately, were channeling the Splash Brothers and were right with Worth County, tied at 23.
Worth County tried to restore order as they switched to a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap that they hadn’t used much this year and Ryan McClellan went backdoor off a Mason Hawk pass and hit a free throw, while Drake Kinsella got a putback after Tevin Cameron got a steal and Jacob New missed a putback try to make it 26-23.
But then Cole Bird caught fire for North Nodaway. He first hit Ryan Riley backdoor; he got on the line and hit a free throw; Bird then started working the offensive glass at will against the taller Worth County squad and scored six straight to put his team up 30-29. Worth County was reeling at that point, and Tyler Bix added two free throws with 5.1 seconds. Then, Worth County made a shocking miscue by stepping on the inbounds line and Bird made them pay by hitting Arron Coleman inbounds to put North Nodaway ahead 34-29 at the break.
The momentum seemed to be all in North Nodaway’s favor as they traded blow for blow for Worth County. The Tigers looked to be in serious trouble as Ryan McClellan picked up his fourth foul early in the period. Mason Hawk hit a cutting Tevin Cameron inside to make it 38-37, but then Arron Coleman hit a 3-pointer and added a steal to make it 45-38. North Nodaway led 49-43 after three.
But then Mason the Hawk came to the rescue for the Tigers. He played like someone totally possessed; he was a one-man wrecking crew, getting tips and steals, wreaking defensive havoc, and dishing it off to teammates like he was a point guard instead of a 6’5” post player.
North Nodaway started off the fourth quarter with a chance to make it eight, but then Cade Allee got a tip, Caleb Parman got a steal, threw it to Cade back to Caleb for a layup. Tevin Cameron got a tip and steal that turned into a transition three for Cade and all of a sudden, it was one point again at 49-48. Nothing went in for either side until Mason Hawk got a putback with 4:39 left to finally put Worth County in front again 50-49 with 4:39 left. Cade Allee and Caleb Parman hooked up again as Caleb, normally a shooter, drove in against two blue shirts and hit a teardrop that went home to make it 52-49.
Cole Bird got a putback and stopped the bleeding for North Nodaway with 1:58 left and Cade Allee missed a runner. Tyler Bix tried to take it in for the lead, but Drake Kinsella blocked him and got the defensive board.
Worth County worked the clock down to 39 seconds, when Ryan McClellan drove down the middle. He was out of control and his shot looked like it was over the backboard and out of bounds, but Referee Benny Wynn claimed that one of the blue shirts tipped it and Worth County kept the ball. Given a second chance, Ryan McClellan was fouled with 32 seconds and hit both free throws to make it 54-51.
Cody Wood kept the pressure on Worth County with a driving layup with 22 seconds and Tevin Cameron missed the front end of a 1-1. But Mason the Hawk struck one last time, getting the putback with 10 seconds left to make it 56-53. Tyler Bix’s heavily contested three pointer was well off and Ryan McClellan was there for the defensive board at the end.
