North Harrison held a pie auction and music concert Saturday at the school and raised money for the music program. The pie auction alone raised over $8,000 for the program. This includes money that was raised to send North Harrison students to music camps. Money raised through private donations, sponsorships, a silent auction, and a free will chili and soup supper brought the total raised to over $11,000.
The pies were made by members of the community as well as North Harrison students. There was a pie judging contest. The pie that went for the most money was one made by student Olivia Babinski, who got a major birthday present when her grandparents bid her pie up to $675 as she sat from the band section looking at them in shock. It was the second such present that day for Olivia, who had helped the girls basketball team win an HDC title outright earlier in the day.
The music program at North Harrison has taken off in the last five years. They have won over 40 trophies in band and music competitions, most of them first place. North Harrison and North Nodaway are two of the few schools in the area with a drum line; North Harrison’s has been in existence for three years and has never lost a competition, topping the success of even the softball program; they even beat out bigger schools. Last year, with several of its members gone to Springfield for the State Softball Tournament, they still won a Drum Line competition that was being held at the same time.
During the concert Saturday, the Junior Color Guard played “Footloose.” The High School Color Guard played the hit song “I Lived.” The Drumline played its number. The Jazz Band played the popular hit, “Georgia On My Mind.” They plan to begin music competitions later this month starting in Maryville.
The school has been getting younger students involved in music. The 5th and 6th graders sang “Get Back Up Again,” with students Jerry Gilpatrick and Hailey Claycomb having solo roles. They then put on a light show to the tune “Flashlight.” They were accompanied by the High School Choir, with students Addie Slaughter and exchange student Vici Stellpflug playing solo roles.
The High School Choir sang “Seasons of Love,” with Cheyenne Peterson having a solo role. They then sang “Imagine,” with students Lola Breshears and Naomi Thomsen having solo parts. They then sang a choral medley with Audry Briggs, Kenna Slaughter, and Lucas McChesney performing solos. One of the main draws for a music program is the opportunity for scholarships; Briggs has signed one with Graceland.
The 5th and 6th grade bands performed next, accompanied by a few of the high school students. The 5th graders performed “Power Rock,” while the 6th graders performed the popular hit “Ghostbusters” and “Home.”
The High School Band performed last, playing the hit song “Centuries,” a medley from the Blues Brothers, and the Star Wars Theme.
