Northeast Nodaway 1st Graders Put on Easter Show

The Northeast Nodaway 1st graders put on an Easter show as they paraded their hats, read sentences and poems, and sang some songs at the Northeast Nodaway elementary school Friday evening.

All of the hats were a different theme. Dylan Wilmes wore a wrestling cap. Jasmine Underwood had a sparkles hat while Carson Runde wore a farming hat -- he has 5 bulls and 2 horses and a few pigs and chickens. Trevor Henggeler also wore a farm cap. Natalie Kessler wore a square hat that showed a lot of things that she liked to do including painting, horses, movies, and popcorn. Noah Pierson wore an Army hat because he liked Army things. Lane Dack wore a farm and hunting cap. Colby Nielson wore a John Deere hat because he says John Deere tractors are the best. Austin Force wore a camouflage hat. He said his favorite color was orange "because the deer can't see me."

Ben Boswell wore a fishing cap while Rilee Luke wore a Barbie cap with money on it as well because she liked to shop. Next was the well-dressed Braidy Munns, "Mr. Handsome Himself." Nathan Meyer wore a train hat because he loves trains and his role model was Thomas the Train. Brooklyn Farnan wore a white and pink hat while Preston Hillyard wore a fishing cat because he likes fishing with the family. He has a story about how he and his dad chased a fish all over the pond after it got away. Madeline Mattison wore a bookworm hat which showed all of her different interests, including swimming, shells, kittens and other animals, and Taylor Swift. Mason Adwell wore a baseball cap because he was a Royals and Cardinals fan as well as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Landon Allen wore a video game hat; one of his favorites was Mario.

Students interviewed adults to find out what it was like growing up. Nathan Meyer learned that there were no DVD's or computers in the 1950's. Ben Boswell interviewed Grandpa Williams, who struck out 18 batters in a game once. Noah Pierson interviewed his mom, who said that there were no computers or large TV's. Carson Runde interviewed his grandfather, whose best friend was Betty Pope, "but they never married!" Madeline Mattison interviewed her grandmother Mattison, who remembered having no air conditioning. Trevor Henggeler learned that spanking was much more frequent in school.

Austin Force learned that his grandpa Richard loved to cook tomatoes with his mom growing up. Landon Allen's grandpa remembered there being no video games growing up. Jasmine Underwood's grandfather remembered going barefoot. Brooklyn Farnan's grandma remembered a time when the family was poor and they all had to get a part-time job. Natalie Kessler interviewed her grandma and learned that they used to wear dresses to school. Lane Dack learned that kids used to walk home from school and get pears on the way. Rilee Luke interviewed her grandma Beth who recalled there being no computers or cable TV.

The kids then sang some songs and read some poems that they learned. There were two about worms, one about friendship, another about alligators in which they wore alligator masks, one nonsense poem, and a song about the nose and other body parts.

Refreshments were served after the performance.
