Worth County grounded King City 48-12 Friday to win districts and advance to travel to North Shelby. The game will be Saturday, November 22nd at 1 pm in Shelbyville. The game will be broadcast on KAAN, and MSHSAA TV will be available for a video stream; cost is $10. The winner will play the winner of Lockwood and Archie. On the other side of the bracket, Concordia will play Wellington-Napoleon while St. Joseph Christian will play Rock Port.
King City got the ball to start the game. Their hope was to jump on Worth County like they did Pattonsburg the week before, but after Ryder Sample returned it to the 31 and caught a short pass to the 39 to set up third and two, Landon Carlson was swarmed under by a host of black shirts led by Brayden Stevens. On fourth down, Brayden Stevens broke up a pass, and the Tigers took over on downs. Jude Archer only got one yard on the first play, but then Cole Ruby took it 35 yards to the house after getting blocks from Hayden Sanders and Caleb New with 10:56 left. Bo Collins caught the extra point pass to make it 8-0.
The tackling broke down on the ensuing kickoff, as four people missed tackles on Ryder Sample, who ran it all the way back to the Tiger 11. On fourth and two at the three, Carlson plowed ahead to the one and a first down. But on the next play, Carlson tried to pitch it to Graham Medsker, but he fumbled it, and it was ruled a forward pass. A false start moved them back to the six, and then King City was flagged again when one of their players pushed one of the backs forward to the four, putting it back to the nine. A pass to Ryder Sample was wide, and Bo Collins got a sack to set up fourth and goal at the 13. King City then fumbled it out of bounds at the 17, and Worth County took over on downs.
Cole Ruby jetted ahead for 16 yards after getting blocks from Lucas Frisch and Caleb New. Lucas Frisch picked up a quick hitter to the 39, and then Hayden Sanders kept an option. He got blocks from Lucas Frisch and Caleb New and took it to the house with 6:50 left in the first quarter and ran in the extra points to make it 16-0.
King City came out firing on its next series, and a 13-yard pass to Graham Medsker put it in Tiger territory again at the 39. Medsker picked up five more on the ground to the 34. But then King City took a shot to the end zone and missed, and Bo Collins stuffed Carlson to set up fourth and five at the 34. A rare miscue by Sample, who dropped a fourth down pass, gave the ball back to the Tigers on downs.
Cole Ruby picked up four after getting a block from Hayden Sanders to the 38. A counter by Hayden Sanders sprung loose for 10 yards after he got a block from Ryder Smyser. On fourth and eight from the King City 30, Bo Collins made a leaping catch to keep the drive alive at the 18. Cole Ruby reversed his field and picked up five to the 13, and a counter to Hayden Sanders picked up ten to the three.
King City nearly made a goal line stand, as three cracks by Hayden Sanders were denied; Hayden normally is good for 3-4 yards every time he touches the ball on that play. On fourth and goal at the one, Jude Archer got blocks from Lucas Frisch and Hayden Sanders and took it to the house with 11:55 left in the second quarter. Caleb New caught the extra point pass to make it 24-0.
Disaster nearly struck King City, as the ensuing kick went off the side of the kicker’s foot and Jude Archer recovered it at the King City 37. Cole Ruby had an apparent touchdown on the next play, but Ryder Sample punched it out right before he crossed the goal line and it rolled out of bounds for a touchback.
The defenses took over for the next two series as Ryder Smyser broke up a fourth down pass after King City had moved it to the Tiger 34, and a holding call derailed the next drive for the Tigers. Worth County lined up to punt, and disaster nearly struck as Tucker Mollus shot through and blocked it for King City. But the ball then caromed off a King City player, and Ethan Lininger recovered it on the 30.
Worth County then moved into King City territory as Caleb New caught a 17-yard pass to the 33, and Brayden Stevens ripped off nine and Cole Ruby eight more to the 16. But a false start put Worth County behind the sticks, and King City took over on downs at the 12.
Ryder Sample caught a 12-yard pass to the 24, and Graham Medsker ripped off eight to the 32 as time was winding down. King City was faced with fourth and two there, but a pass interference kept it alive, and King City was on the 33. But Sawyer Thruman got a sack to put King City behind the sticks, and the Wildkats could only make it back to the Tiger 29. On fourth and six, King City went for the end zone, but it went astray, and Worth County went into the half up 24-0.
King City tried an onsides kick, but Worth County had its hands team in, and Hayden Sanders made a fair catch at the 34. Lucas Frisch ripped off 14 yards into Wildkat territory at the 32. An offsides penalty put it on the 27, and Hayden Sanders took it to the 15. Cole Ruby took it the rest of the way after getting a block from Sanders, and Jude Archer ran in the extra points to make it 32-0.
But it was only a matter of time before King City began its comeback bid, and sure enough, King City started picking up and pace. A long runback followed by two carries by Medsker got the ball into Tiger territory at the 34. Ryder Sample caught a 21 yard pass to the 13, and a helmet-to-helmet hit put it on the four. Landon Carlson ran it in the rest of the way. But Ryder Smyser hurried Carlson on the extra point try, and the game remained a four possession game at 32-6.
Then, after Worth County had converted a fourth and one and gotten into King City territory, they got behind the sticks after a holding call. Ryder Sample then jumped a pass and King City had the ball again on the Worth County 31. A mixup on the pass coverage left Sample all alone, and he caught at 21-yard pass to the 10. A horsecollar penalty put it on the five, and then Sample ran it in the rest of the way with 5:06 left to make it 32-12. Wyatt Hill broke up the extra point pass to keep it at 32-12.
After they picked up a first down, Worth County got stuck behind the sticks at their own 34 after King City sold out to stop the run. But Caleb New came up with a clutch catch to the King City 25. Hayden Sanders ripped off 12 yards to the 13, and Cole Ruby got a cutback run after a block from Lucas Frisch with 1:14 left in the third. Brayden Stevens caught the extra point pass to make it 40-12.
Wyatt Hill broke up a pass on third and eight at the 32, and Isaac King caught a pass one yard short of the first down and Worth County took over on downs at the King City 39. Hayden Sanders ripped off 22 yards to the 17, and then hurdled a defender to the 13. Cole Ruby picked up five, Hayden Sanders three more, and then Cole Ruby five more to the house with 9:14 left in the game. Jude Archer ran in the extra points to make it 48-12 and trigger the running clock.
