The Chicago Tribune and the New Republic reported Monday that masked immigration officers crashed into Dayanne Figueroa’s car in Chicago, pointed guns at her, dragged her out, and released her several hours later without charging her with anything. Ms. Figueroa is a US citizens.
Other drivers had been honking their horns to alert passerby that federal agents were in the area and making arrests, the Republic reports.
The Tribune obtained multiple videos of the arrest.
Ms. Figueroa denied to the Tribune that she was involved in any protest or related activity.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, told the Tribune that Figueroa was part of a group demonstrating as immigration authorities were conducting arrests.
Back before 1850, WBEZ reports that Chicago was a key hub in the Underground Railroad network, serving as a final destination for escaped slaves. After 1850, when the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, it turned into a transit point for escaped slaves going to Canada, where US laws could not reach them.
