Emma Wilmes, Maddy Faustlin, Kiley Yost Come Up Big in Bluejay Comeback Win

Thursday's game between Worth County's junior high girls and NEN could not have started out any better for Worth County, but three different Bluejays came up big in the last 2:15 as they erased a seemingly insurmountable deficit to beat Worth County 28-24. Emma Wilmes, Maddy Faustlin, and Kiley Yost all went off in the closing seconds.

Everything that could have went right for Worth County did go right as they got different people in the scoring column. Jane Hawk started with a putback, Renae Gladstone hit Brooklyn Smith for three, Brecklyn Rush drove the left wing after getting a pass from Renae Gladstone, and Gwynn Healy got a tip that led to a Brooklyn Smith steal to make it 9-0 after one.

The Tiger avalanche continued in the second quarter as Hadley Rush hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Brooklyn Smith. Khloe Burns hit a free throw to put NEN on the board, but Brecklyn Rush hit a guarded three off a pass from Smith. Maddy Faustlin countered with a free throw, but Brooklyn Smith cut inside and got a pass from Renae Gladstone to make it 17-2 at the 3:08 mark.

But all of a sudden, Northeast started getting in the passing lanes and contesting everything, and the tide began to turn. Emma Wilmes scored off a steal and then Ellie Jackson hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bluejay deficit to 17-7 at the half.

Jane Hawk, who had been an anchor on the defensive glass for the Tigers, picked up her third foul early, and the Bluejays took advantage of her absence in the third quarter as Emma Wilmes went coast to coast after a defensive board and then scored off an Ellie Jackson steal to cut it to 18-11. Brooklyn Smith scored from just inside the line and added a free throw to make it 21-11, but Maddy Faustlin countered late in the third to cut it to 21-13.

Ellie Jackson converted a third-chance shot and Emma Wilmes jumped a pass to make it 21-17, but Worth County still seemingly had it under control after Renae Gladstone hit a free throw with 2:57 left to make it 22-17. But then Maddy Faustlin attempted a 3-pointer, missed it, only to follow her own miss and make it 22-19. Then, the rebounding broke down again as Kiley Yost, who hadn't scored all night, grabbed a putback to make it 22-21. After the Bluejays got a steal, Emma Wilmes put Northeast in front for the first time with a 3-pointer with 1:12 left.

Brooklyn Smith missed a runner and then Maddy Faustlin drove and drew a foul, hitting both free throws to make it 26-22. Gwynn Healy missed a 3-pointer, Renae Gladstone missed a try, and then Brooklyn Smith finally converted with 36 seconds left to cut the Tiger deficit to 26-24. Emma Wilmes missed two free throws with 5 seconds left, but the backbreaker followed when Kiley Yost put it back in for the dagger.
