Nellie Alldredge had 11 steals and Gilman City’s girls avenged a one-point loss to North Harrison with a 28-18 win Tuesday, November 18th. The Hawks were playing without their leading scorer, Chyles Webb (ankle), and Nova Smith (flu). But after Webb went down in the Mercer tournament and the Hawks subsequently fell to the Shamrocks for third place in the Mercer Tournament, they suddenly realized they could win without Webb, getting wins against Pleasant View the night before as well as Tuesday’s game.
Alldredge, pressed into service after coming off the bench for the majority of the year, stole the ball early and often for the Hawks. Everybody else picked up their game as well, with Emmery Smith and Aspen Wyatt both hitting double figures in Tuesday’s game, and Wyatt posting a double-double. Another benchwarmer, Bella Whitney, was also pressed into service and responded with four points off the bench; Fierce Bella showed some newfound aggression and looked to attack the baseline every time she touched the ball on offense.
It looked like it would be Shamrocks all the way at first. Tayley Johnson started off the game with a steal and Amelia Long added a free throw. Emmery Smith knocked one down from the high post, but Hadley Williams got loose in transition, Long took a charge on defense, and Millie followed up with a putback to make it 7-2 after one. Aspen Wyatt got a putback to put the Hawks on the board early in the second, but Quincy Norris, who has shown a lot of improvement in the post recently, knocked down two free throws to make it 9-4.
But then Nellie Alldredge controlled the game from there, stealing the ball at will, and the Hawks began to come back. Nellie got a steal and a layup to start a Hawk rally; then, Fierce Bella got one of her baseline runners to go down to make it 9-8. Aspen Wyatt got her second putback of the quarter to put the Hawks up 10-9 at the half.
The third quarter belonged to the Hawks after Wyatt got her third putback of the game to start the quarter. Emmery Smith, a cousin of Hali, got the hot hand and went off for six in the period as the Hawk lead grew to 18-11 after three.
After Fierce Bella converted against for the Hawks to make it 20-11 to start the fourth, North Harrison started swarming, pressing, and trapping, forcing Gilman City to burn three timeouts to try to stop the bleeding. Tayley Johnson provided a spark for the Shamrocks, scoring three straight to make it 20-14. But then Emmery Smith slashed down the baseline to stop the bleeding to make it 22-14. Tayley Johnson got a steal and fed Millie Long to make it 22-16, but then Aspen Wyatt took over, scoring the Hawks’ last six points to close out the win.
