Area Water Bodies on Impaired Water List
The following area bodies of water are on the DNR’s proposed Impaired Waters List for 2020:
The East Fork of the Grand River is listed due to e.coli. The Harrison County Lake is listed due to Mercury in fish tissue due to atmospheric pollution. In addition, the DNR newly listed the lake due to Chlorophyll-a in the water.
The Middle Fork is listed due to e.coli. Mozingo Lake, which supplies the City of Maryville, has been listed for 10 years due to Mercury in fish tissue.
New this year is Nodaway Lake, which is on the proposed 2020 list due to Chlorophyll-a.
The Nodaway River is listed due to e.coli. In Harrison County, the North Bethany City Reservoir is listed due to Mercury in fish tissue, and has been since 2010.
In Sheridan, the Platte River is listed due to e. Coli, and has been since 2010. In Harrison County, the Thompson River is listed due to e.coli.
There are an increasing number of waters that are on the list, according to St. Louis Public Radio, which did an article on the waters. However, the DNR says that the reason is that they are testing more water bodies. There are over 115,000 miles of streams in the state.

Kaden Koch Scores 30 to Ignite Shamrock Boys
North Harrison’s boys hung 78 on Grundy County in the nightcap, getting a 78-42 win as Kaden Koch went off on the Panthers, getting 30 points in the win. Last year, Grundy threw a scare into North Harrison, leading for much of the first half and forcing over 30 turnovers before the Shamrocks came back and hung on for a 46-45 win in the HDC Tournament. But this year, Kaden Koch, who was not on the floor for that game, made sure that it wouldn’t happen again, getting 14 of his 30 points in the first quarter.
This year, it looked like something like this would happen again. Grundy, which surprised North Harrison with a trapping zone in Galt last year, had built on that and added a press to their arsenal. They had gotten off to a slow start this year, but were heating up and were on a roll, up to 5-7 before Saturday’s game. Tanner Williams scored from inside, Caden Gann got a steal, and Ryan Metcalf scored in transition to put Grundy up 6-2 in the early going.
The Shamrocks fought back to a 10-10 tie, and then Panther big man Cooper Lewis picked up his third foul, which opened the floodgates for North Harrison. Koch went off, getting a pass inside from Wade Briggs, getting loose in transition for another basket, and getting loose inside for a pass from Wade Briggs for a 3-point play. Wade Briggs added a 3-pointer as the Shamrocks ensured there would be no repeat of last year as they pulled ahead to a 20-13 lead.
Steven Willhite scored from the baseline after Hunter Parkhurst kept a possession alive, Kaden Koch got fouled in transition and hit two free throws after Brett Emig got in transition after a quick outlet from Willhite, and then Emig got a tip, leading to a Cruz Ury steal and free throws from Emig to make it 26-15 after one.
Gann cut it to 26-17 for Grundy County, but then North Harrison went on a scoring binge similar to one of Worth County’s girls’ outbursts last year, when they hung 37 in a quarter on Braymer and 35 in a quarter on King City. Wade Briggs hit a free throw, Kaden Koch scored on one play where he stepped through two players, and Cruz Ury was getting on a roll, scoring twice in transition.
Just as he was getting on a roll, Ury picked up his third foul, but it didn’t matter as Koch scored again in transition, Willhite scored off a pair of steals, and Brett Emig scored in transition on one play and got a good look off a Willhite inbounds pass on another. When the dust had settled, North Harrison had scored 17 points in a span of just over four minutes to go up 43-17 to put the game out of reach. They led 51-26 at the half.
Kaden Koch and Brett Emig scored four each to start the third quarter, and Grundy County never got closer than 29 the rest of the way.
Kaden Koch had 30, Wade Briggs 18 and five 3-pointers, Brett Emig 16, Steven Willhite 6, Cruz Ury 4, Hunter Parkhurst 3, and Collin Briggs and Avery Cook 2.
Steven Willhite had 12 boards. Kaden Koch had 9, Brett Emig 6, Collin Briggs and Brandon Hamilton 2 each, and Hunter Parkhurst, Cruz Ury, Wade Briggs, Kamden Robertson, and Tyson Gibson 1 each.
The Shamrocks had 25 assists for the night. Steven Willhite had 6, Kaden Koch 5, Brett Emig and Wade Briggs 3, Hunter Parkhurst 3, and Cruz Ury, Nick Babinski, Brandon Hamilton, and Matthew Heintz 1 each.
Hunter Parkhurst had 9 tips. Wade Briggs had 7, Brett Emig 5, Steven Willhite, Cruz Ury, and Tyson Gibson 2 each, and Kaden Koch and Kamden Robertson 1 each.
Brett Emig had 5 steals, Kaden Koch had 4, Steven Willhite and Hunter Parkhurst 3, Wade Briggs and Kamden Robertson 2 each, and Cruz Ury and Cooper Cracraft 1.

School Board Rehires Dr. Martz, Offers Contract to Megan Poppa
The Worth County School Board voted to rehire Superintendent Dr. Matt Martz at the current salary for the upcoming school year. The board will review his salary at a future meeting. The board also voted to offer a probationary teacher contract for the 2020-2021 school year. The board also voted to accept the resignation of Brooke Hecker at the end of the current school year.
The Technology program was rated as “Excellent.” Strengths listed include the ability to replace 75 Chromebooks a year, the ability to use federal money through vocational classes, the ability to upgrade network speed, more security cameras, and a complete computer science course progression. Concerns listed include lower enrollment numbers in business tech classes and the upcoming change to a new technology director in the upcoming school year.
The Extracurricular programs were rated as “Above Average.” Strengths listed include the fact that 86% of junior high or high school students are involved in extra-curricular activities. Many teams and organizations and individuals have achieved high levels of success in the past year in academics, athletics, music, and co-curricular activities. The addition of red shale to the softball field helped with drainage. The school plans to complete the new shed for the softball field in the spring of 2020. Flooring, a camera, and Internet access was put in the weight room. All coaches and sponsors are MSHSAA approved and trained in CPR/AED/First Aid and concussion management.
Several concerns were listed as well. The junior high softball team only had eight 7th and 8th graders that were eligible during the season. Freshmen had to play down for the school to field a team. The track will require a structural spray in summer 2021 at a cost of $55,000. There is still a drainage issue around the backstop area. Visitor seating at the football field needs improved.
The school got back on rotation as far as uniform replacement goes, but they still need to keep up with rotation. Junior high softball uniforms have not been replaced since 2006, and band uniforms have not been replaced since 1995. Junior high track uses old uniforms as well.
Practice times are difficult because of high participation and duplicate numbers. Basketball times are conducted at inconvenient times because of having only one gym. Sometimes, high school basketball teams are forced to practice at 6 pm, and the school has to fit four teams in on the same day during junior high.
The stage is still not available for music practices during basketball practice, while students miss instructional time because of activities.
Recommendations include continuing to maintain the high participation rate, coaching preparation, and certification. Other recommendations include maintaining funding levels to replace uniforms, budgeting to maintain the track, and placing a concrete barrier in front of the softball bleacher area to help with runoff. The addition of more practice areas would have to be a part of the district’s overall facility plan.
The following are programs that the school offers; figures are the number of students participating: Student Council (10), FFA (63), Vocal Contests (7), Football (17 + 9 NEN), Class Officers (16), Honor Choirs (6), FCCLA (45), Cheerleading (12), Instructional Contests (8), Basketball (29), Choir (8), Band (26), FBLA (21), Academic Bowl (9), Golf (8), Track (36), Honor Bands (3), Wrestling (3), NHS (21), and Softball (17).

The Bluejays, who had not broken the 30 point barrier all year, put together a rare offensive outburst as they scored nine points in the first 3:13. But South Harrison kept pace for most of the first half, tying it at 9, 11, and 17. Finally, Scheiber scored a putback and hit one from the high post to put the Bluejays in front 21-17 at the break.

But Angela Standiford’s three-point play put the Bluejays back in front 24-23 with 3:02 left in the third. Jaden Atkins hit from the high post to make it 26-23 after three quarters.
Ruby Wilmes converted an offensive board into a free throw and Schieber went coast to coast to make it 29-23. South Harrison switched from zone to man to man and extended their pressure, but NEN kept milking the clock and refused to turn it over. South Harrison got within 29-25, but Schieber made it 30-25 with 1:50 left.
There was a heartstopping moment as the Bulldogs got a steal, but a contested layup was missed and Atkins hit both free throws with one minute left to make it 32-25. South Harrison had three chances to convert, but missed them all before Cassy Redden hit a free throw with 20.3 seconds left. South Harrison got a putback to get within six, but Jaden Atkins dribbled out the clock for the win.

Ice cold shooting plagued the Bluejays in the third quarter, and Tri-County got as close as 13 in the period. NEN did not score a single field goal until Dylan McIntyre converted a 3-point play with 7 seconds left in the third to make it 39-23 after three.
After that, Northeast got back on track as Drew Wiederholt scored off a free throw, Auston Pride scored from inside, Ben Boswell hit two free throws, Pride got loose inside, and Zach Pride cleaned up on a Colton Swalley steal to give NEN its biggest lead of the night at 50-29.

Cruz Ury Comes Up Big Against NEN
North Harrison scored the first ten points of the game last Monday against Northeast Nodaway in the South Harrison Tournament, and then held off repeated Bluejay charges to get back in the game. Finally, with the game on the line and NEN threatening to catch the Shamrocks at the end, Cruz Ury, pressed into service because of the absence of Hunter Parkhurst (flu), came up big twice with his only points of the game to give momentum back to the Shamrocks and get them the 54-43 win. North Harrison would go on to lose a 47-45 heartbreaker to Mercer in a game that was close all the way; however, they turned around and beat South Harrison 64-55 for the third place trophy Saturday.
The Shamrocks threatened to run the Bluejays out of the gym as Kaden Koch hit a 3-pointer and Steven Willhite was able to get to the rim at will in the early going as they scored the first 10 points of the game. But then NEN switched to a zone and the game slowed to a crawl.
Auston Pride kept the Bluejays in the game with six in the first period, as they got the deficit down to 13-6 after one and they closed to four twice in the second quarter, getting to within 19-15 at the break. Pride had 12 of Northeast’s 15 points in the first half.
Ben Boswell, held to two in the first half, hit a 3-pointer to make it 21-18, only for Brett Emig to go off for the Shamrocks in the third quarter to the tune of 11 points as they pushed it out to double digits. Steven Willhite started a 9-0 run with a backdoor layup; despite Boswell taking a charge on defense, Emig countered with a pullup, a 3-pointer off a pass from Cruz Ury, and a putback to make it 30-18.
Boswell finally got going again after Northeast switched back to man, and the Bluejays made a charge again as Boswell hit a coast to coast 3-point play and added a 3-pointer to make it 30-24 with 1:56 left in the frame. The teams traded blows until Koch scored off a steal to make it 36-26, only for Dylan McIntyre to scoop up a carom and score for the Bluejays to cut their deficit to 36-28 after three.
The blue shirts got the deficit down to five three times in the fourth, as Pride scored from inside and Reed McIntyre scored from the high post to make it 39-34. Wade Briggs finally hit a 3-pointer to make it 44-36 with 2:45 left, only for Boswell to hit a pullup to make it two possessions again at 44-38.
The Bluejays called a timeout and set up a press, only for Cruz Ury to come up big for the Shamrocks by getting behind the NEN defense to make it 46-38. Ben Boswell countered with a fast break the other way to make it 46-40, North Harrison missed a 1-1, and NEN had a chance to make it three or four, their closest since the first quarter. But Boswell missed a pullup, and Cruz Ury came up big again, hitting two free throws to make it three possessions with 1:39 left at 48-40. North Harrison only allowed a guarded 3-pointer by Boswell late, and after Ury stepped to the line, North Harrison was 8 for 8 the rest of the way from the line.

Camden Castleberry, Jayliegh Robins Bail Out Shamrocks
North Harrison let an early lead slip away against Maysville, a team that had beaten them by 51-30 last year. But just as it looked like they were given up for dead, the Shamrocks charged back into the lead after falling behind by as much as 5 in the fourth quarter. The game had some twists and turns and a crazy ending, but they came out on top 31-29 against the Wolverines for their fourth win of the year and their third win in their last four games in the opening round of the South Harrison Tournament. They did better against Princeton than the first time they played them, but dropped games to them and HDC title contender Tri-County for third place.
The Shamrocks held Maysville to their second lowest point total of the year; the Wolverines had put up 40 or more regularly even against strong teams, and had close losses against Albany and South Holt to their credit.
North Harrison had a rare offensive outburst as five quick points from Emma Craig put them ahead 5-2 at the outset. Maysville chipped away for the rest of the quarter and moved ahead 8-7 after one thanks to some outside shooting from Ashley Brown. But North Harrison appeared to be back in control again after Emma Craig scored off a steal, Camden Castleberry hit one free throw, Jayliegh Robins had two, and Camden hit Emma inside and then followed up with a 3-pointer to put North Harrison up 17-8. Claire Catlett’s free throws closed Maysville to within 17-12, but Emma Craig grabbed a defensive board and went the distance to put the Shamrocks back in front 19-12.
But then North Harrison reverted to form and couldn’t buy a bucket as Maysville chipped away, eventually moving in front 24-22 after Catlett’s 3-pointer. Catlett hit another at the start of the fourth to put Maysville up 27-22, seemingly in control.
But then Camden Castleberry hit a guarded NBA 3-pointer from the left wing with three minutes left to revive North Harrison’s chances. After North Harrison got the ball back, Camden hit Jayliegh Robins on the baseline to put North Harrison up 28-27 with 1:38 left. Following a Maysville turnover, Jayliegh had a wide open look at another three with just over a minute left, but it went in and out. But Ashley Brown missed a go-ahead three with 46.3 seconds and Carly Rinehart made one of two at the line to make it 29-27 after Maysville was forced to foul.
Robins then jumped a pass at midcourt and North Harrison took it down to 26.7 seconds before Camden Castleberry hit one out of two to make it 30-27. Maysville had a chance to tie with a three, but Catlett missed a 3-pointer. Emily Brown got an offensive board and kicked it out to Catlett for another look with 8 seconds left, and her shot was nothing but net, seemingly sending the game into overtime. But it turned out that she was two feet inside the line, meaning North Harrison preserved a one point lead at 30-29.
North Harrison got it into Camden Castleberry and she rushed it into the other end, dribbling all but 1.6 seconds off the clock before she was fouled. She made one out of two, and Maysville could not get a shot off before time expired.
Emma Craig and Camden Castleberry had 11 points each. Jayliegh Robins had 5, Rainey Fordyce 3, and Carly Rinehart 1.

Tiger Girls Board 55, Down Lafayette JV
Worth County’s girls beat out Lafayette JV 52-23 last Tuesday to break a slump and win the opening round of the Stanberry Tournament. The Tigers had dropped three out of their last four. Sometimes, breaking out of slumps means an ugly win. The Tigers missed a ton of shots in Tuesday’s match, but were swarming and flying to the glass, getting 55 boards in the win.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Kristin New hit a free throw and Anna Gladstone scored from inside and went coast to coast against three defenders. But then she sat with two fouls and the Irish climbed right back into the game. Erinn Lotspeich hit a guarded three to make it 5-4 after one, and then the green shirts moved ahead when Jersey Crouteau scored early in the second to make it 6-5.
But despite Anna on the bench with foul trouble, Worth County got going as Kristin New scored the next six points to put Worth County in front. Regan Allee cleaned up on a miss to put Worth County in front 13-6. Lotspeich converted a three point play to make it 13-9, but then Merrideth Spiers hit a free throw and scored off a putback, Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer and added a free throw, and Kristin New added two free throws to put the Tigers in front 22-11 at the break.
Anna Gladstone came back in and took over in the third, getting an inside shot, scoring off a steal, and converting off a Kristin New steal to make it 28-11 and force Lafayette JV into a timeout. But Worth County continued to pull away as Anna went on to get 10 points in the period. Allee, New, and Kaylee McElvain contributed as well as Worth County led 38-17 after three.
Regan Allee started off the fourth with a 3-pointer, Jill Hardy added another, Anna scored four more in the period, and EmiLee Brown got on the board for the first time of the year as the Tigers pulled away to a 30 point lead at one point.

Tiger Girls Win Stanberry Tourney, Beat Stanberry for Third Time; Anna Gladstone is MVP Again
Worth County’s girls won their second tournament of the year, beat Stanberry for the third time, and Anna Gladstone was named Tournament MVP for the second time this year as the Tigers beat Stanberry 39-28 Saturday. Regan Allee was also named to the All-Tournament Squad.
The Tigers had been in a slump for the past few weeks, but they finally got their whole team back and playing together; they did better against Stanberry in Saturday’s game than they did the week before, when they needed a late push to get a 43-37 win.
The win was the first Stanberry Tournament win for the Tigers since the 2003-2004 season, when Tiffany Troutwine and Charlea Lewis led the Tigers to a 72-45 win over Mound City that year.
The game turned out to be a slow defensive struggle for both teams; neither team could get looks at the basket, and open looks were hard to come by and every possession was important. Stanberry had knocked off Platte Valley in a similar struggle, getting a late 3-pointer from Ellie Ellis to break a tie and win 31-26 to punch their ticket to the finals.
The Bulldogs pulled out all the stops to defend their tournament title; they brought in a PA announcer, they played music during timeouts, and they kept the scoring down in the 20’s and 30’s. But Worth County was up to the challenge, having played four different times in the Civic Arena and having been through plenty of late game situations by now.
The game was knotted at 2-2 for the first 4:22 until Kaylee McElvain finally broke the ice from the left side. Anna Gladstone added a 15 foot pullup and a transition basket to put the Tigers up 8-2 as they overcame two early fouls from Regan Allee.
Regan Allee’s 3-pointer and Kristin New’s putback put Worth County up 13-4 at the 3:37 mark of the second and forced Stanberry into their first time out. The lead grew to 18-6 when Kaylee McElvain hit a 3-pointer and Regan Allee hit two free throws. But Stanberry started chipping away, getting free throws from Riley McQueen and a 3-pointer from Ellis to cut it to 18-11 at the half.

But Stanberry started chipping away, getting free throws from Riley McQueen and a 3-pointer from Ellis to cut it to 18-11 at the half.
Ashley Peterson hit from the right wing to cut it to 18-13 to start the third, but then Anna Gladstone scored from inside off a high-low pass from Kristin New, and Kristin scored from inside off a pass from Megan Cassavaugh and converted the three point play to make it 23-16. Ellis countered with a 3-pointer, but a pair of drives from Regan Allee put Worth County up 27-16 at the 3:46 mark.
Stanberry lobbed it in twice to Lexi Craig and Anna Gladstone picked up her third foul as the Bulldogs closed to within 27-20, but Regan Allee and Kristin New both scored off drives to make it 31-20 after three.
Once again, Stanberry made a push to get back in the game as Sydney Mattson hit a 3-pointer and Anna Gladstone picked up her fourth trying to stop a layup after a defensive breakdown, and Ashley Peterson hit a free throw to make it 31-24. Kaylee McElvain scored off a drive, but then Sadie Runde threatened to take over, hitting a third chance basket and getting a steal to make it 33-28 at the 4:05 mark of the fourth.
But then Anna Gladstone came back in and Worth County went to their delay game. Lexi Craig got a steal, but Regan Allee got a tip and Merrideth Spiers stole the ball back for Worth County. Anna drove the lane and hit Spiers, who missed both free throws, but Ellie Ellis missed a runner and Worth County ran it all the way down to 1:49 before Anna Gladstone hit both free throws to make it three possessions at 35-28.
Once again, Ellis missed a runner; the ball went out off of one of Worth County’s players, but Lexi Craig missed and Kristin New hit both ends of a 1-1 to make it 37-28. Ellis, who had come up big against Platte Valley with a critical three, missed one against Worth County and Megan Cassavaugh hit two more free throws to clinch it.
Regan Allee had 13 for the Tigers. Four different Tigers had 7 or more points as Kristin New had 9, Anna Gladstone 8, and Kaylee McElvain had 7. Megan Cassavaugh had 2.
Merrideth Spiers had 2 blocks, while Regan Allee and Kaylee McElvain had 1 each.

Regan Allee Scores 1,000th Point as Tigers Beat Warriors, Advance to Finals
Worth County took down Albany 60-32 Thursday to set up a third match with Stanberry in Saturday’s Stanberry Tournament championship. In the game, Regan Allee got a season high with 22 points. Needing 20 to get to 1,000 points, she went on a scoring burst in the third quarter and got it with a 3-pointer at the 3:05 mark of the period off a transition assist from Megan Cassavaugh.
The Tigers had every reason to expect a battle from Albany, which is an up and coming team in the GRC. The Warriors had played Platte Valley tough earlier in the season in Albany and still had Gabby Newman. Albany had given Worth County everything they could handle in Albany last year before Anna Gladstone went into one of her bezerk modes and carried the Tigers on her shoulders past the green shirts and scored a career high 28 points.
But no bezerk was needed for Friday’s game, in which the Tigers scored the most points anyone had scored against Albany up to that point, while holding the Warriors, who normally score in the 40’s, to their third lowest point total of the year. They held Newman to 12 points; Kristin New had two blocks, both hard stuffs on Newman trying to get to the rim. Albany tried to isolate Anna Gladstone and get her fouled out, but she only got three, and swatted away three shots from people trying to take it at her in the paint. And Allee, despite three first half fouls, was hitting her shots and making everything else easier for the Tigers; three other gold shirts had nine or more. Allee was finding open people when defenders were keying on her; she had 8 assists for the night.
Regan Allee drove and kicked out to Kaylee McElvain to start the scoring; then, Megan Cassavaugh got a steal and took Newman to the hole, dropping one over her to make it 4-0. The teams traded blows until late in the first, when Regan connected and Kristin New got a putback. Gabby Newman scored off a steal, but Anna hit a rare 15-foot pullup at the buzzer to put the Tigers up 15-7.
Newman hit a 3-pointer to start the second, but Regan Allee answered with one of her own, Anna Gladstone scored from inside off a pass from Regan Allee, Regan hit Kaylee McElvain in the high post, and then Jenna Smith hit Anna Gladstone in the post to make it 24-10.
Gladstone picked up her second foul at that point, but after Paige Brown hit free throws to bring Albany back to within 27-13, Kaylee McElvain hit a 3-pointer, Kristin New hit a free throw after taking Newman to the hole, and Allee hit from the top of the key to make it 34-13.
Albany has had some impressive wins this year; they have beaten North Andrew twice, along with quality wins over Pattonsburg and surprising King City and threw a scare into Stanberry before losing by two. Their coach, Brooke (Hogue) Crawford, has wiped out a lot of big deficits at Savannah, Mound City, and Albany. They started chipping away, getting the deficit down to 36-20 early in the third, and Gladstone got to three fouls. But then Kaylee McElvain got loose in transition and got a pass from Regan, and then Allee got to 1,000 with a flourish, getting a 3-point play in transition, scoring off a drive after Kristin New got her a pass, and getting a 3-pointer in transition after Megan Cassavaugh got her the ball to make it 46-20.
Newman countered with a 3-pointer for Albany, but then Kaylee McElvain got a backdoor layup and Kristin New got loose in transition, got a pass from Jenna Smith, and ran over Newman, a shot which knocked her out of the game. Kristin hit the ensuing free throws to make it 50-23. Consecutive baskets from Sierra Anthony cut it to 54-30 with 2:59 in the fourth, but then Jenna Smith hit back to back jacks to give Worth County a 30 point lead at 60-30.
Regan Allee had 22 points for the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain 11, Anna Gladstone 10, Kristin New 9, Jenna Smith 6, and Megan Cassavaugh 2.
Anna Gladstone had 3 blocks, Kristin New had 2, and Merrideth Spiers had 1.
Kristin New had 7 boards. Kaylee McElvain had 6, Regan Allee and Jenna Smith 5, Anna Gladstone 4, Jill Hardy 3, Megan Cassavaugh 2, and Merrideth Spiers 1.
Regan Allee had 8 assists. Megan Cassavaugh had 5, Jenna Smith 3, and Kaylee McElvain, Kristin New, and Anna Gladstone 1.
Anna Gladstone had 7 tips. Kaylee McElvain and Regan Allee had 3, Jill Hardy, Kristin New, and Jenna Smith had 2, and Merrideth Spiers had 1.
Megan Cassavaugh had 3 steals. Anna Gladstone, Jill Hardy, Jenna Smith, and Kristin New had 2 each. Regan Allee had 1.

She excelled in academics and was proud of the fact that she and her brother, John, were the first in their family to get college degrees, both going on to PhD programs. Pat completed her doctoral program in Economics ABD (all but dissertation) at the University of Michigan.
On Dec 28, 1963, Pat married Sherjang Singh Sidhu who she met in Michigan while working on her doctorate. The wedding ceremonies took them on an around the world trip. They traveled first to India via London and Istanbul, and after touring Northern India, they stopped in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii before returning to Castro Valley. After the marriage, they returned to Ann Arbor to complete their studies before moving to New Dehli, India. That marriage ended in divorce, and Patty returned to the United States.
On Oct 2, 1970, Pat married Janos Horvath, a Hungarian Economics Professor at Butler University in Indiana. They lived in Bloomington on a 65-acre farm. Patty briefly taught Economics, but discovered that she didn’t really like teaching, so instead she focused her time co-authoring Economic grant papers with her husband.
After her divorce in 1976, Pat moved briefly to Austria where she studied German and economics before returning to Castro Valley to live with her parents. After her father died in 1985, she cared for her mother until her death in 2011. The two were inseparable during these years. In 2006, Pat and her mother returned to their Missouri roots, settling in Sheridan in a house Pat designed. Pat was a board member of the Sheridan Express Newspaper Cooperative, and could be oftentimes be found around the community with her dogs and a good book.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Burke. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Burke, of El Cerrito, California and by many cousins on the West Coast and in Sheridan and St. Louis, Missouri.

Tiger Boys Find Second Wind, Put Braymer Away 56-24
Worth County got off to a fast start, struggled with hacking and fouling in the second quarter, and then found their second wind in the second half to put Braymer away 56-24 Thursday.
Garrison Woods' drive put Braymer up 4-3 at the 6:03 mark of the first quarter, but they didn't score another point in the period as Worth County scored the last 19. Jaxon Anderson hit a 3-pointer and then took a charge on defense to fuel the run. Alex Rinehart took on two red shirts and scored, forcing Braymer into their first timeout.
But nothing changed as Alex Rinehart scored off a steal, added a free throw, got loose in transition, and then scored off a Zayne Swope steal. Aydan Gladstone hit Jackson Runde for three, Aydan went coast to coast, and Runde got loose behind the defense as Alex aired one out to make it 23-4 after the period. Aydan Gladstone fueled the Tiger run, getting eight boards in the first period.
But then Braymer switched from man to a 1-3-1 trapping zone to start the second quarter, and Aydan Gladstone and Jackson Runde picked up their third fouls. Worth County was shorthanded, playing without Lucas Wake (flu); Bob Baker was pressed into service. His size caused problems for the Bobcats; he only had two points, but altered a ton of Braymer shots. But the Bobcats chipped away throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter, getting to within 23-10 when Parker Shoe's putback went through.
Alex Rinehart then got Worth County going again, getting loose in transition and getting a pass from Jackson Smith; he added a 3-pointer and Smith added another one to restore order for Worth County.
Worth County settled down, avoided the foul trouble that hurt them in the first half, and robbed Braymer's wallet right and left in the third quarter to build their lead up again. Jackson Runde and Alex Rinehart hit back to back jacks to start the third. Dennis Kimberling scored off a carom, but then Jackson Smith converted a putback, Alex Rinehart and Jaxon Anderson hit two free throws, Anderson hit a 3-pointer, and Alex Rinehart scored off a pair of steals to make it 48-12. Aydan Gladstone got a tip, Jackson Runde got a steal, and Gladstone got a finish to make it 50-12 to give Worth County its biggest lead at the 3:40 mark of the third.
Baker got on the board in the fourth quarter, as did Timothy Richardson, who converted a steal into two free throws.
Alex Rinehart had 22 points for the Tigers. Jackson Runde had 10, Aydan Gladstone 8, Jaxon Anderson 7, Jackson Smith 5, and Bob Baker and Timothy Richardson 2 each.
Jaxon Anderson had two blocks, while Alex Rinehart and Jackson Smith had 1.
Aydan Gladstone had 12 rebounds. Jaxon Anderson and Jackson Smith had 5, Alex Rinehart and Jackson Runde had 2, and Bob Baker, Levi Cassavaugh, and Jon Galanakis had 1 each.
Aydan Gladstone had 5 assists. Jackson Smith had 4, Jackson Runde, Alex Rinehart, and Jaxon Anderson had 3 each, and Zayne Swope and Jackson Runde had 1 each.

Tiger Girls Lose Heartbreaker in Braymer
Worth County's girls battled all night, but were no match for Jasmine Taylor, one of the top post players in the area, and the Braymer Bobcats as they fell 40-38 in overtime. The Tigers had their chances, but were done in by hacking and fouling, as three of their players fouled out at the end. They were shorthanded, playing without Jenna Smith (shoulder). Anna Gladstone was playing in her second game back from an ankle injury, but she was still favoring it some.
The Tigers were totally out of sync offensively as they fell behind 8-4 after one, as Braymer was knocking off the cutters and sagging people in to help out. Regan Allee shot the Tigers back into the game with seven points in the second, and Kristin New added four as the Tigers forced some turnovers and went ahead 17-12 at the break.
Taylor and the Bobcats moved ahead 20-18 at the start of the third as they started making a concerted effort to get it into Taylor. But despite Anna Gladstone picking up her third and fourth fouls, Worth County fought back in front as Kaylee McElvain hit a 3-pointer to put the Tigers back in front 27-24 after three. McElvain got a three-point play to start the fourth and Regan Allee added a free throw to make it 31-24 at the start of the fourth.
But the hacking and fouling mounted, and Worth County got into more foul trouble as Kaylee McElvain picked up her fourth. Hallie Russell hit a 3-pointer, Dallas Hall hit a baseline shot, and Kennedy Stone scored from inside to tie it up at 31 at the 3:40 mark. Braymer then broke the tie as Taylor kicked it out to Russell, but after Anna Gladstone missed a shot for the Tigers, Worth County got a stop and Gladstone got behind the defense and took a pass from Kristin New to tie it up again at 33. Russell missed a 15-footer with 55 seconds left, and Worth County worked it down for the last shot. But Anna missed a good look from the right wing at the buzzer, and the game went into overtime.
Braymer controlled the opening tap and Taylor Francis hit a scoop shot right off the bat to put the Bobcats in front. Worth County missed four different tries to tie it up, and then tried unsuccessfully to press Braymer as Kennedy Stone got behind the defense and got a putback to make it two possessions. Taylor's free throw made it 38-33 as Kristin New fouled out. Regan Allee's drive with 1:36 left cut it to 38-35, but then she and Anna Gladstone both fouled out trying to get the ball back as the lead grew to 39-35.
But then Merrideth Spiers, of all people, hit a 3-pointer after Jill Hardy had kept a possession alive with an offensive board; Hardy rebounded well that game and had seven. Dallas Hall hit one out of two to make it 40-38 with 20 seconds left, but Worth County missed three different tries to either tie or take the lead and Worth County put the Bobcats on the line with 4.6 seconds left. There was still time to rush it up the floor after the ensuing missed free throws, but Braymer stole the outlet pass to preserve the win.
Regan Allee had 14 for the Tigers. Kaylee McElvain had 9, Kristin New and Anna Gladstone 6 each, and Merrideth Spiers had 3. Anna Gladstone had 9 boards and Jill Hardy 7. Regan Allee had 6 steals.
The girls previously lost to Mount Ayr 68-51 as Gladstone sat out with her sprained ankle. Anna came back sooner than expected for the 43-37 Stanberry win; Regan Allee had 16, Gladstone had 12, and Kristin New had 10. During the game, Anna Gladstone passed April Miller (now Healy) for the all-time leading scorer in the third quarter. The game was close all the way and tied at 34-34 late in the fourth. But Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left to break the tie and Kristin New added two free throws. Sidney Mattson countered with a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, but Worth County got the ball to Kristin New, who knocked down two free throws to keep the game at two possessions at 41-37. Regan Allee added two more free throws as the Tigers were 6 for 6 from the line in the final two minutes.
