Worth County's Tigers will play a rematch against Tarkio Friday. The Tigers won handily in the first meeting, 62-16 in Tarkio. The Tigers will host the Indians Friday at 7:00 in the rematch.
For Tarkio to stay in the game, they have to be able to fill the holes better on run support and they have to be able to cover the long pass plays. Worth County got most of their long runs when Tarkio failed to plug the holes that opened up as Dallas Greenland averaged well over 10 yards a carry for the Tigers. On defense, Tarkio was unable to keep up with Aaron Patton as he had almost 100 yards receiving against the Indians along with three touchdowns. A third area of concern was punt coverage as Worth County got a lot of long punt returns to set up a short field for much of the night.
For Worth County, they will have to do their jobs on defense against one of the better ball-faking teams in the area. Tarkio's offense revolves around deception and carrying out the fake handoffs, springing their backs loose. Worth County's players will have to stick to their defensive assignments to prevent long gains. They will have to get up early on Tarkio; the Indians, throughout the year, have gotten better as games progressed. Worth County was able to hang 38 first quarter points on Tarkio in the last meeting between the two teams. The Tigers will get back Dylan Kinsella, who sat out a mandatory MSHSAA suspension following the Stanberry game; he will provide invaluable run support on defense and blocking for the line. Truman Moore on the defensive side and Josh Warner on the offensive side stepped up well in his absence.
The Tigers welcomed the chance to get rested for a week following the end of the season. They had light practices last week with no game on Friday. However, they will return to harder practices as they play first Tarkio and then the winner of the Rock Port/North Nodaway game. If Worth County wins against Tarkio and Rock Port wins against North Nodaway, Worth County would travel to Rock Port for a rematch against the Blue Jays, which handed Worth County their only loss of the year on the opening day of the season. Worth County, Rock Port, and Stanberry went on to share the 275 title this year.
In opening round district action Friday, South Nodaway beat Craig 54-12 at Barnard. The game was called at halftime even though it was not a 45-point game at that point. The winless Hornets forfeited a game to Worth County earlier in the year. Blake Myer ran for 91 yards in the win for the Longhorns.
South Holt beat DeKalb 76-32 in another district game. The Knights have now won three straight after dropping their first seven games. The game was a shootout as the Knights led 50-26 at the break. But they pulled away in the second half to win. Mitch Mueller led South Holt with 207 passing yards and ran for 136 more.
In a game that was marred by a lot of picks, North Nodaway eventually pulled away to beat West Nodaway 54-22. It was 32-22 after three quarters, but then North Nodaway put up 22 points in the fourth for the win. North Nodaway threw six interceptions in the game while West Nodaway threw five. Koby Reynolds threw for 398 yards for the Mustangs in the win as North Nodaway attempted 52 passes and completed 25 in the win.
Union Star, playing in their first season back from having not played football for two years, won their fourth game of the year, a 48-34 win over Stewartsville. Nick Palmer carried the Trojans, throwing for almost 400 yards in the win as the Trojans threw the ball 52 times in the game. Palmer threw for seven touchdowns.
In the other two first round eight man games, Norborne defeated Chilhowee 72-18 and Hardin-Central defeated Lincoln 72-28.
