Grant City Council -- City Tentatively OK's High Street Halloween Closure

The Grant City Council OK'd a Halloween night closure of High Street from the Methodist Church to Lover's Lane contingent on approval from residents. The Worth County Fire Auxiliary will be hosting a safe trick-or-treat event from 5:30 to 7 that evening. Members of the newly-formed Worth County R-III Dance Squad will be escorting kids down the stretch so that they can trick-or-treat that night. High Street has been a popular cruising place for teens in past years during this time of year. The Auxiliary will provide treats for kids that evening. They will still plan on supervision of kids walking down that stretch even if the plan to close off High Street for that evening falls through.

New lighting has been installed in City Hall. The new lights are brighter and there is no more constant need to change lightbulbs that were constantly burning out with the old system.

Economic Developer Tammy Ueligger reported on County Market Days and other events around the community. County Market Days had so much traffic last time that the final day (October 20th) was moved to the Square. It was a success despite the rain that day. Ueligger is still sending contribution letters for the economic development position. Flowers N' Things was named Business of the Month for this month. Dennis Downing won a drawing for the Hannahbear gift; they were Business of the Month for last month.

The city voted to pay off the street loan early. Water Superintendent Greg Miller reported on the inspection of the city tower. The inspector said that there was a crack in the floor of the tower and that the city should monitor it every 2-3 years as long as it was not leaking. It would be expensive for the city to drain the water tower, rent an auxiliary tower so that the city could continue to receive water service, and rent equipment to fix the crack. The inspector said that it was more important to concentrate on the rust around the system.

The city has taken possession of the old fire station now that the Grant City Fire Department has their new fire building south of the basketball court. The city is moving water and sewer stuff to the old fire station. The city moved two water meters.

The city is wrapping up work on the pool/bathhouse project. The final needs include a lifeguard stand, ADA compliant doors, a pool lift, and a sign.

The next Grant City Council Meeting will be held on November 20th due to the Thanksgiving Day Holiday.
