Worth County got 19 points from both Tyler and Caleb New and they had five players with at least six or more points as the Tigers won their third straight game 63-51 over Stanberry Friday night following a long layoff from the Christmas break. Stanberry, with Colby McQueen, had the player (19 points), and Jaren Stoll stepped up for them to join McQueen in double figures with 13. But the ball movement was better for Worth County, who had 23 assists for the game to just 9 turnovers. Stanberry managed to stay in the game by making several shots with a hand in their face, but Worth County was able to pull away for the win.
Coach Les New had reason to worry after the JV got outworked and outhustled in the first quarter before mounting a comeback bid in the second quarter that came up short. And sure enough, Stanberry came out ready to play as Kolton Dias hit a shot with a hand in his face early, and Stanberry battled Worth County to a 7-7 tie in the early going after Colby McQueen hit another outside shot with a hand in his face.
But then Karson Briner, back to full strength after an ankle injury in December, scored backdoor after a pass from Caleb New, Tyler New got a steal, and then Tyler scored off a Bo Collins screen to make it 13-7.
Jaren Stoll countered for Stanberry with a guarded three to make it 13-10, but then Tyler New answered with one of his own and then Tyler New went coast to coast to set up Karson Briner at the buzzer to make it six again at 18-12.
Bo Collins fed Tyler New with a quick outlet at the start of the second quarter. McQueen hit a tough shot from the wing, but Bo Collins drove and scored, Cole Ruby got loose in transition after Collins had a block on one end, Hayden Sanders pushed it up the floor, and threw to Cole for the finish, and then Karson Briner kept a possession alive and hit Caleb New for three to make it 27-14.
Colby McQueen hit a couple of tough shots to bring his team back to within 30-19 at halftime, but at the start of the second half, Bo Collins threw a no-look pass to Caleb New, who was knocked down as he drained a 3-pointer. He made the free throw, and then Bo Collins knocked one down from the high post to make it 36-19.
Stanberry started chipping away after Colby McQueen went coast to coast, and then Jaren Stoll hit a shot and Aiden Graham hit a pair of free throws to cut it to 39-25. The teams traded buckets throughout the remainder of the third quarter and the early part of the fourth quarter.
Finally, Tyler New got loose in transition to make it 59-38 to bring the Tiger lead up to 21. McQueen drove and set up Jordyn Wright, and then McQueen hit a guarded three to cut it to 59-43. Tyler New and Cole Ruby hit free throws down the stretch to make it 63-45 before Worth County started subbing freely.
Tyler New and Caleb New both had 19. Karson Briner and Bo Collins each had 8, Cole Ruby 6, and Hayden Sanders 3.
Karson Briner had 2 blocks and Bo Collins and Caleb New had 1.
Tyler New and Karson Briner had 6 boards. Caleb New and Bo Collins had 3, and Ethan Lininger and Cole Ruby had 2.
Tyler New had 8 assists. Bo Collins had 5, Caleb New 4, Hayden Sanders and Karson Briner 2 each, and Cole Ruby and Cannon Fletcher with 1.
