North Nodaway Extends Chris Turpin’s Contract to 2027-28, Approves Two Substitute Teachers

The North Nodaway School Board, at their regular meeting on Wednesday, voted unanimously to extend Superintendent Chris Turpin’s contract through the 2027-28 school year. The board also voted to name Sydney Reed and Courtney Kennedy as substitute teachers. The board voted to name Stephanie Turpin as the Dribbler Coordinator for the school. She will teach elementary kids dribbling skills after school; the goal is to perform at a halftime of a home basketball game this year.

The board heard a presentation on life at the new preschool. At the start of each day, students greet each other, read morning announcements, do the Pledge of Allegiance, and review classroom rules.

They then meet as a group to discuss key concepts, vocabulary words, and the letter and color of the week. They also work on rhyming and segmenting words.

They then break into small groups, where they work on handwriting, math, letters, and writing their names. They also visit the discovery center, the art center, and the sensory table. There is also time for them to do free play and to play outside.

This is the third year that the preschool has used Eureka Math. They learn a lesson on the carpet, and then do a hands-on activity at the tables.

There are also special days. This year, they have had Grandparents Day, a day where they made apple pie, and a day where they had shared reading.

The first reading of the new calendar for the 2024-25 school year was done. Tentatively, the first day of school for North Nodaway will be August 21st. Thanksgiving break will be from November 26th to December 1st, with school resuming on December 2nd. Christmas break will start with an early dismissal on December 20th and will run until January 6th, with school resuming on January 7th. Spring break will be from April 17th to 20th with school resuming on April 21st. The last day of school will be May 16th with an early dismissal at 12:45 that day.

Elementary Principal Heather Townsend reported that Lindsay Alexander has been subbing in the front office, and the school has received a lot of positive comments from teachers. Really Great Reading Supplies have come in. The 100th day of school will be on February 9th.

Superintendent Chris Turpin reported that the new bus barn was up and running and the school was able to put the buses in it with the bad weather.

The school has 3.25 days of Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) and 2 days of being out without having to make up any additional time and stay over the state limit of 1,044 hours.

The open house that was to have been held Friday was canceled due to an incoming snowstorm.

The school is waiting on Pinnacle to hook up the CO2 system; they are waiting for the weather to improve. The guttering has arrived at the elementary; they are also waiting on improved weather. The school is waiting on windows in the new counselor’s office, wiring for the mini split heating system, and some touch up painting.

Superintendent Chris Turpin, Principal Roger Johnson, and their staff were able to move into their new offices. The board held its first meeting in the new boardroom.

The Morgan Rolling Flag for the gym, which will be displayed during the National Anthem, has arrived.

The school received a letter from Kawasaki saying they were going to provide a $5,000 donation to the school.

Turpin discussed projects for summer. They include epoxy for the high school hallways, new lockers for the high school, and possibly some drop ceilings with new lighting. At the elementary, they will focus on getting the new playground equipment installed.

Mrs. Townsend and Mr. Turpin will be setting up interviews for the elementary secretary’s position.

The new elevator has been approved and the lift has been decommissioned to the state. The school has two years to remove the lift.

Next month’s board meeting will focus on the principals’ contract and evaluations.
