Mustang Boys Survive King City in First Round

North Nodaway’s boys survived a nerve-wracking first round game in the Stanberry Tournament as they beat King City 51-41 to set up Thursday’s showdown with Worth County. They somehow won the game despite giving up 28 offensive rebounds and turning it over 18 times.

The Mustangs were riding a high following their 83-60 win over DeKalb, but sometimes, when putting together a big game like that, the next game will be a letdown. Sure enough, King City came firing right out of the gate as Brody Wall hit a 3-pointer, Jonothan Garlock scored off a drive, and then Garlock added two free throws and just like that, King City was up 7-0.

But King City has played stretches where they could hang with anyone, and then they have played stretches where they couldn’t beat anyone. Sure enough, Aydan Blackford started scoring for North Nodaway and Ethan Fry hit the first of six 3-pointers, showing that his outburst against DeKalb was no accident, cutting it to 9-7.

Collin Potter countered with a 3-pointer for King City, but Ethan Fry, who had a 3-pointer wiped out by coach Cody Jenkins’ timeout, simply stepped up and hit another. Aydan Blackford hit a free throw and Owen Martin drove and scored to make it 13-12 before Cooper Mooney’s free throw knotted it up at 13.

But then King City called on Josiah Schellhorn off the bench; he was like a bull in a China shop the rest of the way, grabbing offensive boards right and left for King City. Ryder Sample hit a 3-pointer, Schellhorn scored four during the next stretch, and Garlock scored off a Sample steal to put King City up 22-13 just three minutes into the second quarter. But it was Ethan Fry who kept the Mustangs in the game, hitting a couple of 3-pointers, including a transition three as North Nodaway rallied back to within 22-20 at the half.

The Mustangs picked up where they left off as Aydan Blackford scored off a drive and Ethan Fry hit back to back jacks to make it 28-22 early. But then Schellhorn came back in for King City, and he started being a bull in a China shop again and the Wildkats started swarming and trapping North Nodaway. Once again, the lead disappeared as Garlock, Schellhorn, and Potter all scored to make it 31-30 King City.

But Mason Casner, who had been scoreless to that point, suddenly stepped up and started scoring, driving and scoring to put North Nodaway back in the lead. Aydan Blackford scored from inside and then Casner hit a 3-pointer to make it 37-31.

The Wildkats were swarming and crashing the boards again, and Cooper Mooney’s putback at the buzzer cut it to 37-35. And then Brody Wall’s steal cut it to 39-38 early in the fourth.

But once again, someone stepped up for the Mustangs as Brice Trimble got on the board with a long 3-pointer and Casner scored again to get the Mustangs back in front 44-38.

Garlock hit a 3-pointer hit a 3-pointer to cut the King City deficit in half, but then Mason Casner scored off a drive and Blaine Clements got on the board after missing a ton all night, hitting an inside shot and adding a pair of free throws before Mason Casner hit another one to close out the Wildkats.

For North Nodaway, Ethan Fry hit 18, Aydan Blackford 12, Mason Casner 10, Owen Martin and Blaine Clements 4 each, and Brice Trimble 3.

King City kept attacking the rim all night, but Clements and Martin were there to block them all night. Clements had 5 blocks and Martin 3.

Blaine Clements had 12 boards. Owen Martin had 6, Ethan Fry and Brice Trimble 5 each, Mason Casner 3, and Aydan Blackford 2.

Owen Martin had 7 assists. Brice Trimble had 4, Ethan Fry 3, and Blaine Clements, Aydan Blackford, and Mason Casner 2.

Owen Martin had 6 tips. Mason Casner, Brice Trimble, and Ethan Fry had 2, and Aydan Blackford, and Blaine Clements had 1.

Blaine Clements had 3 steals. Aydan Blackford, Owen Martin, and Mason Casner had 2 each, and Kaeden Nave had 1.
