Hayden Sanders Erupts in Third Quarter; Tigers Drop Mustangs Again

The third quarter was kind to Worth County once again as they broke up a tie game in the third quarter as Hayden Sanders went off for nine points in the period and the Tigers scored 25 in the quarter. The Tigers continued to pull away in the fourth quarter and got the 57-46 win over North Nodaway, their second win over the Mustangs this year.

The remainder of the Stanberry Tournament was canceled due to weather.

At first, it looked like the game would belong to the Mustangs, who got five from Brice Trimble, three from Aydan Blackford, and two from Ethan Fry to make it 10-0. They looked to have solved their rebounding woes that hurt them against King City, outrebounding Worth County 5-1 in the early going. Owen Martin was on Tyler New and he was hounding him on defense.

But then two things happened to help Worth County. The first was that they reasserted control of the boards, outrebounding North Nodaway 29-15 the rest of the way. Secondly of all, it was the play of Hayden Sanders. Last year, in junior high football against Bedford, Worth County was faced with a huge deficit against the Bulldogs when Sanders had a hard one on one tackle on the kickoff against one of the Bedford backs that sparked the Tigers to a comeback and saved their undefeated season. Something similar happened this time when Sanders came off the bench early and knocked down a 3-pointer early to stop the bleeding and get the Tigers back into the game.

Tyler New then got untracked, grabbing an offensive board and hitting two free throws. Bo Collins got another putback, and then Tyler New hit one of his buzzer beaters, knocking down a 3-pointer after getting a screen from Bo Collins to get the game tied again at 10-10 after one.

The game stayed at one possession throughout the second quarter, but it looked like Worth County would take control as they started getting control of the boards and Cole Ruby and Tyler New scored to put them up 19-16. But then Karson Briner, their best rebounder, got into foul trouble again and picked up his third and Brice Trimble hit an NBA 3-pointer to tie it right back up again at 19 going into halftime.

With Briner battling foul trouble again, someone else had to step up on the boards, and it was Tyler New who did so, getting 11 boards for the game. It was he who was grabbing defensive boards, weaving through the blue shirts at will, and setting Hayden Sanders and the other Tigers up as the quarter turned into a track meet.

Tyler New and Aydan Blackford turned the game into a scoring duel, with Tyler scoring 10 points in the period and Aydan Blackford 9 for the Mustangs. But when the dust had settled, Tyler New had more support from his supporting cast and the Tigers were up six at 44-38 going into the fourth quarter. Hayden Sanders had 9 in the period and Cole Ruby and Caleb New all chipped in.

Mason Casner, who had been bottled up by Bo Collins all night, finally got untracked with five points early in the fourth to cut the Mustang deficit to 48-43. They had a chance to cut it to two or three, but then Worth County got a stop and Hayden Sanders pushed it ahead to Tyler New to make it 50-43. Tyler New added a free throw to make it eight.

North Nodaway twice cut it to seven, but then had to start fouling and Worth County kept two possessions alive with offensive boards after missed free throws as Tyler New hit three of four from the line to close it out.
