Kynah Steele got a double double for the Tigers, but once again they fell up short 45-29 to Stanberry Friday as they continue to search for their first win.
All of their numbers improved across the board. They got a season high in rebounding with 29. Their assists went up to 13, their tips were at 26, and their steals were at a season high with 16.
But the little things added up in Stanberry’s favor. Amelia Wallace took over the game for the Bulldogs with 22 points, and since the Northeast Nodaway game, they had a second scoring option step up with Lindsey Hailey hitting 11 points, including three 3-pointers to take the heat off Wallace. They have the dominant post player in Wallace; now, they are looking for more shooters in order to stretch out defenses and force enemy teams to pick their poison.
Worth County had their chances in the game, but too many little things on their end added up. They gave up 16 offensive boards to Stanberry, better than in the Gilman City game, but still too many. They gave up 17 points off easy baskets to Stanberry; 9 off second chance baskets, including one of Hailey’s triples. They gave up 4 off steals; their turnovers were still high at 19. They gave up one off a coast to coast basket from Wallace, and one when they left Katlyn James all alone. Those 17 points accounted for the margin of the game.
The game hinged on two huge runs by Stanberry, during which they scored 15 of their 17 easy baskets. The first such run came at the start of the second quarter, with Stanberry leading 11-9, but Worth County was hanging with them thanks to six first quarter points from Rylee Ruckman. Consecutive missed boxouts led to a layup from Wallace, and then a triple from Hailey to make it 16-9. After James added a free throw, Kynah Steele knocked down a shot to break the run and make it 17-11, but then Trista Lager knocked one down from the baseline, a defensive lapse left Katlyn all alone, and then Worth County tried to force a pass and Wallace was there for the steal and the easy basket on the other end to make it 23-11.
To their credit, Worth County started fighting back as Rylee Ruckman hit her third triple of the game, Kynah Steele scored four down the stretch, and Kristen Tracy, getting more and more confident with her shot, knocked one down from the high post to cut it to 25-20.
A play that might have swung the momentum in Worth County’s favor happened at the end of the half as Worth County threw a perfect skip pass to Rylee Ruckman who buried a 30-footer at the halftime buzzer, but it was wiped out by a traveling call.
But Worth County continued to hang with Stanberry for the first six minutes of the third quarter, answering a free throw from James with a steal and a three point play from Kynah Steele to make it 26-23 with 3:40 left.
But then, after Stanberry got a 3-pointer from Hailey and an inside shot from Wallace to make it 31-23, a steal from Wallace at the end of the third turned it into double digit territory at 33-23. Instead of fighting back, the Tigers let it snowball as Wallace took over the fourth quarter, scoring 12 in a five minute span to make it 45-25.
Kristen Tracy and Kynah Steele went 4 for 4 in the closing minutes to make it closer, but Stanberry was able to run out the clock for the win.
