Missouri Changes from Presidential Primaries to Caucuses

Bridget Gibson, Freelance Reporter

In a surprising move on April 24, 2023, the Missouri House failed to pass a bill that would have reinstated the presidential primary for the 2024 election. With Governor Parson's signature on HB 1878, the result was overhauling Missouri’s election rules and eliminating the State’s presidential primaries in favor of a caucus system.

The new law requires voters to present a photo ID when casting a regular or absentee ballot and replaces the presidential primary held in March with a series of caucuses.

Each party will be doing a Presidential Preference Primary. The legislature changed this and it is now a law.

Voting in the caucus can be performed in one of two ways, by mail in ballot or by in person voting.

The mail in option will be done between February 12 and March 12 and to participate, you will need to go to the Missouri Democratic Party (MDP) website during that time period (https://www.missouridemocrats.org/) and request a ballot. Mail in ballots must be received by the MDP by 10:00 a.m. on March 23.

In person voting will be held on March 23 from 8 a.m. until 12 noon at a polling location in each county. Gentry County has designated the Stanberry Community Center as its polling location. The location for Worth County will be determined and that information will be announced in the near future. To vote in the caucus, you must be a registered voter.

After the March caucus vote, there will be additional meetings for the Democratic Party:

1) A county mass meeting will be held no later than April 18.

1) A district mass meeting will be held no later than May 9.

3) The State Convention will be held on June 22.

4) The Democratic National Committee Convention will be held from August 19 through August 22.

As more information is available, it will be made public.
