Worth County’s boys beat Albany for the second time this year, this time using six 3-pointers in the third quarter to put the Warriors away 57-25 after Albany had hung with Worth County in the first half. Bo Collins had a career night for the Tigers with 14 points and played a good floor game as well. The game was played in the first round of the Stanberry Tournament. The game was moved to King City due to inclement weather.
Tyler New scored off a Bo Collins steal, Caleb New hit a 3-pointer off a Tyler New pass, and then Tyler New got the ball to Bo Collins inside to make it 7-0 with 4:20 left in the first quarter. Albany was switching back and forth from a 1-2-2 to a man to try to keep Worth County off balance.
It looked like the Warriors might make things interesting after Worth County’s best rebounder, Karson Briner, got two quick fouls and Albany got Shae Miller going inside to cut it to 7-3. But then Tyler New scored off a drive, Cannon Fletcher hit a 3-pointer, and Ethan Lininger scored inside off a Tyler New steal to make it 14-3 after one. Albany could not get anything going offensively all night; while Worth County only surrendered the ball five times, Albany turned it over 24 times, including two five seconds calls.
Timothy Poppa got going off the drive a couple of times to cut Albany’s deficit to 16-8, but then Miller picked up his third foul trying to battle Bo Collins for a rebound and the Warriors didn’t have an answer for Bo Collins down the stretch in the first half, as he scored six after Miller went to the bench and the Tiger lead grew back up to 24-12.
With Albany having to focus on Bo Collins down low, that opened up both Tyler and Caleb New in the third quarter. First, Caleb New hit a 3-pointer after Karson Briner kept a possession alive with an offensive glass. Then, he hit another one. Then, Bo Collins got a steal, took it to the other end, drew a bunch of green shirts, and found Tyler New in the corner for three. That opened up the floodgates as Tyler New hit three more triples. Ethan Lininger, who played some quality minutes with Briner on the bench with foul trouble much of the game, chased down an errant pass and found New for three, then Bo kicked one out to Tyler, and then with time winding down in the third quarter, Bo handed another ball off to Tyler, who made an off balance three with 8 seconds left to make it 44-18 after three.
Cole Emerson hit a 3-pointer and Dalton Worrell hit two free throws as Albany had its first stretch with consecutive scores since the first quarter to make it 44-23, but then Tyler New drove and knocked one down from the high post, Karson Briner finally got untracked with a putback, and Tyler New got a steal and found Bo Collins inside to make it 50-23. Tyler New hit his fifth 3-pointer of the night to trigger the running clock, and then Bo Collins caught a carom in the high post and found Karson Briner down low, and then he went coast to coast to close it out before both teams began subbing freely.
