Ethan Fry Hits 23; Mustangs Score Most Points in 15+ Years

Ethan Fry hit a career high 23 points and North Nodaway withstood a 47 point outburst from Devin Hall as they scored the most points in 15+ years and beat DeKalb 83-60 Friday.

The last time they scored over 70 in a game was the 2018-19 season, when they scored 77 in an overtime win over South Holt. Cody Wood had 41 points that game. The last time they broke the 80 point barrier was in the 2016-17 season, when they put up 81 points against Union Star. The 2017-18 season was a tough year, but they had a 73-66 comeback win against West Nodaway that year. The last time they broke the 70 point barrier multiple times in a season was the 2014-15 season, when they beat North Harrison 73-55 and South Page 70-37 that year. The last time they broke the 70 point barrier before that season was the 2008-2009 season, when they did it three times. They put up 71 against Northeast Nodaway, 77 against South Page, and 70 against Clarinda Academy.

The Mustangs got off to an early 9-4 lead as Mason Casner scored twice, Brice Trimble hit from the left wing, and Aydan Blackford hit a 3-pointer. But Hall was relentlessly going to the rim for the Tigers, and by the 4:06 mark, DeKalb was already in the bonus and Brice Trimble and Owen Martin were on the bench with two fouls each. But Blaine Clements, Kaeden Nave, and Trevin Wyllie all stepped in and provided quality minutes and played for most of the remainder of the half.

Hall’s free throws cut it to 9-6, but then Kaeden Nave hit a 3-pointer. Missed free throws hampered the Mustangs during that stretch, but they still pulled away as Blackford got a putback, Nave scored off a drive, and Ethan Fry scored off a putback to make it 18-6 at the 2:15 mark.

Blackford’s drive put the Mustangs up 22-10 after one. Hall kept hitting for DeKalb, but the Mustangs pulled away at the 3-point line as Ethan Fry hit three 3-pointers, Kaeden Nave one, and he added a drive. Hall had 20 of his team’s 23 points, but the Mustangs were up 37-23 at the 1:37 mark of the first half before Aydan Blackford and Mason Casner scored off drives to make it 41-23 with 46 seconds left.

Gavin Moore countered to cut it to 41-25, and then someone else besides Hall started scoring for DeKalb as Jayden Schneider and Luke Miller cut it to 43-34 by the 4:34 mark. But this time, the Mustang starters had a rally of their own as Owen Martin finished one over Hall and Ethan Fry hit a 3-pointer after Brice Trimble got him the ball to make it 48-34 and keep the game out of reach.

Hall kept coming to cut it to 48-36, but then a backbreaking sequence followed as Ethan Fry hit a 3-pointer and then Owen Martin stole the ensuing inbounds pass to make it 53-36 with 3:22 left. Hall took it right back at North Nodaway, but then Ethan Fry hit a 3-pointer and Brice Trimble got loose in transition to make it 58-38 at the 2:05 mark.

Hall got up to 33 points for DeKalb and cut it to 60-43 with seven seconds left in the third, but then Aydan Blackford pushed it up ahead to an unguarded Brice Trimble, whose unguarded 35-footer at the third quarter buzzer put North Nodaway up 63-43.

But DeKalb is one of those teams who doesn’t give up easily, and Hall kept coming, scoring 14 points in a span of four minutes to try to keep his team afloat. The Tiger deficit got down to 76-60 at one point, but then Owen Martin scored off a drive, Aydan Blackford hit what should have been a 3-pointer, but the officials called it two, Kaeden Nave hit a free throw, and then Trevin Wyllie scored off a Nave steal to close out the Tigers.

Ethan Fry had 23 points to lead the Mustangs. Mason Casner and Aydan Blackford had 16 each, Kaeden Nave 11, Brice Trimble 7, Owen Martin 6, and Blaine Clements and Trevin Wyllie 2 each.

Blaine Clements had 1 block.

Aydan Blackford, Mason Casner, Blaine Clements, and Ethan Fry all had 6 boards. Brice Trimble had 4, and Owen Martin, Trevin Wyllie, Jordan DeLeon, and Ridge Clements all had 1.
