Tigers Pick Up Forfeit Win; 275 Becomes Wide Open

Worth County’s football team picked up a forfeit win over Craig/Fairfax as the winless school was unable to field eight players due to injuries. Stanberry beat Rock Port 26-12, throwing the Highway 275 Conference race wide open. Worth County lost to Rock Port 36-26 in the first game of the year and is now tied for second along with Mound City, Nodaway-Holt, and Rock Port behind Stanberry. CFX had played Rock Port the week before and Rock Port put up 72 unanswered points in the first quarter before pulling their starters and putting in their JV.
Worth County will next play in a Homecoming tilt against North Nodaway.
Mound City got back on the winning track with a 46-0 halftime win over West Nodaway. They  put up 30 points in the first quarter and never looked back. West Nodaway has dropped three straight after their win to start off the year.
Northwest (Hughesville), the team that Worth County played in the playoffs last year, destroyed DeKalb 60-8, ending that game at halftime.
Union Star got their first win in quite some time. They did not field a football team the past two years due to lack of numbers; however, they fielded a team this year and threw a scare into DeKalb before losing 40-32. Against South Nodaway, they built up a big lead against the Longhorns and held on for a 48-30 win. Nick Palmer carried the Trojans, running for 121 yards and passing for 210 more.
Last year’s cellar team, the Nodaway-Holt Trojans, turned things around this year. They are off to a 3-1 start following their 44-42 overtime win over Tarkio behind the passing of Nick Patterson. Patterson attempted 44 passes and completed 30 for 401 yards against the Indians. Tarkio, after a tough-luck year, is having an up and down year with a 2-2 start so far. Tarkio wiped out a 24-14 halftime deficit to send it into overtime knotted at 36. But Nodaway-Holt scored first and converted the extra points while Tarkio failed to complete their extra points to account for the difference.
In a game that featured a battle of unbeatens, it turned out to be a mismatch as North Andrew beat Hardin-Central 58-0 in the third quarter. Hardin Central was a playoff team from last year that threw a scare into Stanberry before the Bulldogs came back to win, but Zach Officer carried the Cardinals on the road as he picked up 215 yards in 12 carries.
The most closely watched game of the area was Stanberry and Rock Port and it lived up to its billing. Stanberry took advantage of a muffed punt in the closing seconds of the first half to go ahead, but Rock Port struck right back to lead 8-6. But from there, it was all Stanberry as the Bulldogs pulled away for the win, 28-16.
St. Joseph Christian is off to a tough start, having dropped two games; however, they evened their record at 2-2 following a 74-14 win over Chilhowee.
The game to watch next week will be Mound City’s game at Rock Port. Mound City will be looking to contain Rock Port’s ground game while Rock Port will be looking to shut down Mound City’s high-powered offense. A win by Mound City over both Rock Port and Stanberry would vault them into a tie for first in the Highway 275 Conference. If either team loses, they would need some outside help in order to claim a share of the crown.
