Justin Smith, son of Ms. Tanya Gladstone, was one of 45 high school students who completed the six-week intensive academic program. Justin's team received a third place medal in the Science Olympiad and a Certificate of Diligence in the Forensic Science Simulation.
The Upward Bound Math & Science Regional Center is funded by a grant from the US Department of Education and is designed to attract high school students who are interested in math and science. Students who attend this program spend eight hours each day in classes discussing topics such as math, science, and technology or in group or personal counseling. Students also learn stress and time management, study skills, healthy habits, relationships, developing a six-year education plan, applying for scholarships and financial aid, and starting their own resume.
Students traveled to places like the Remington Nature Center in St. Joseph, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo, and Worlds of Fun.
During the coming school year, participants will complete a project of their choosing and meet with a mentor. They will also enroll in math and science classes while still in high school, then ideally go to college and become involved in majors that lead to math and science careers.
