Worth Bridge Reopens to Traffic

The Worth Bridge reopened to traffic for the first time in 19 years Tuesday afternoon. County Commissioners along with construction people, County Clerk Roberta Owens, Road & Bridge Foreman Jim Fletchall, and Darrell Woods, whose mother owns land next to the project, were present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project was paid for under the Federal BRO Program, which has been used to replace many different bridges in the last decade in the county. The gravel work will be complete in two days with a 4" base and rock on top of that.

The bridge had been washed out in the Great Flood of 1993, which also washed out the Isadora Bridge. It had been a main traffic artery before being washed out. As part of the project, a lot of stabilization work was done on the east side; the creek had been cutting into the road before the project started. While more work needs to be done, Commissioner Dennis Gabbert said that it was a lot better than it had been.
