Tiger Girls Overcome Slow Start; Kambree Briner Scores 11 in Revenge Win

Worth County's girls overcame an early hole by King City, and Kambree Briner led a balanced attack with 11 points as they avenged their first loss of the season with a 40-24 win Saturday. The win gave them third place in the Stanberry Tournament. The Tigers had four players with eight or more points in the win.

At first, it looked like the first time when the two teams played; King City looked like it would run Worth County right out of the gym when Allison Schneider scored on an inside shot and Brylin Armfield, who had torched the Tigers in the first game with 22 points, promptly scored four more as they took a 6-0 lead. Audrey Runde got Worth County on the board, only for McKinley Potter to score from inside to make it 8-2.

Kambree Briner did all she could to bring Worth County back, scoring four straight to make it 8-6, only for Armfield to hit a free throw and Karsyn Mollus to come off the bench to hit a putback to put King City up 11-6.

But little did anyone know that King City would only put up six more points until midway through the fourth quarter, when the game. Worth County put Megan Tracy on Armfield; she faceguarded Armfield, who didn't get many touches the rest of the way. Instead of King City beating Worth County up and down the floor and finishing easy shots, it was Worth County getting back on defense, forcing King City into tough shots from outside, and limiting them to one shot down the floor. They did a much better job of helping in the post, meaning the lob opportunities that were there the first game for King City were not there the second time.

The win was as different as night and day for the Tigers, who couldn't buy a stop against Stanberry in their 61-42 loss, let Kynzee Adcock go off for 26 points, and played the fourth quarter without Kristen Tracy, who fouled out 17 seconds into the period. Meanwhile, King City, who struggled to finish off Worth County the first time after building a big lead on them the first game, continued to struggle to close out games; they took an early lead on Albany in the semifinal game, lost the lead in the third quarter, fought back to tie it at 23, only to go scoreless the rest of the way.

Megan Tracy shot the Tigers back into the game; she hit one triple, Kambree Briner hit two free throws to knot it at 11, and then Megan Tracy hit her second of the quarter to put Worth County in front 14-11 after Kristen Tracy had pushed it up the floor and went coast to coast. Briner's free throw at the end of the quarter put Worth County up 15-11 after one.

Despite Rylee Ruckman picking up her third foul in the second quarter, the Tiger lead stood up for the period before Kambree Briner hit a reverse layup in the closing seconds of the half to make it 21-15.

After Audrey Runde hit a 3-pointer to start the third quarter, the score was stuck there for a long time as neither team's defense would give ground. Finally, Brylin Armfield picked up her third and fourth fouls in quick succession and Megan Tracy hit two free throws to get it into double digits at 26-15. Karsyn Mollus came off the bench and drove into the high post and threw up a bank shot that went in, but Kristen Tracy got on the board with a pair of shots from the high post to make it 30-17 after three.

With King City trying to jump Worth County's dribble weave, the Tigers started going backdoor, with Audrey Runde hitting a pair of free throws and Rylee Ruckman getting on the board after being on the bench with foul trouble most of the morning. Brylin Armfield came back and tried to get King City back in, cutting inside and scoring to make it 34-19, but Megan Tracy went backdoor and scored and Kristen Tracy hit two free throws to give Worth County its biggest lead at 38-19 before Armfield fouled out and King City threw in the towel.

Both teams struggled from the field, but Worth County made 11 free throws to only four for King City.
