Cole Ruby sparked Worth County’s boys early, while Hayden Sanders carried them late after Northeast Nodaway was threatening to make things interesting as the Tigers pulled away to a 63-41 win in the Stanberry Tournament Tuesday, January 13th. But the Tigers are still searching for answers as they promptly dropped two close games to Platte Valley and North Andrew, as they still struggled to close out tight games. Against Platte Valley, they led 31-26, only to falter in the second half and lose 53-46. Against North Andrew, they fell for the second time at 47-43. They now face a must-win game against state-ranked Princeton if they are to stay alive in the GRC West race, since they have one conference loss already.
Ryder Smyser got a putback, and Cole Ruby hit a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up 5-0 early, but Northeast Nodaway, despite having only one win for the season, kept hanging around. Wyatt Scadden scored four points and Bentin Roberts two as they closed to within 7-6 at the 4:34 mark. Cole Ruby took the Tigers on his shoulders, hitting a 3-pointer, grabbing a steal and finishing, and grabbing an offensive board and converting a 3-point play to make it 15-6.
The Bluejays kept hanging around behind the improved play of Jace Burns, who grabbed a putback to spark his club. Lance Runde scored from inside to end the first quarter and Bentin Roberts went backdoor for two and went coast to coast for a pair of free throws to bring NEN to within 19-14.
But Caleb New, back from a scary injury to his teeth that knocked him out of the Stanberry game, got loose inside twice and got passes from Ryder Smyser to break the run. Wyatt Scadden knocked one down from the high post, but Hayden Sanders, playing his best game since the Mount Ayr game, hit a 3-pointer to get himself going. Caleb New hit two free throws, Ethan Lininger hit two from inside, and Caleb New converted a third-chance putback to make it 32-16.
But Jace Burns converted a putback late to make it 34-21 at the half. Cole Ruby kept hitting in the third, but Northeast kept hanging around after Bentin Roberts tripped and fell, but somehow got a pass away to Lance Runde for three. They twice cut it to ten at 38-28 behind Jace Burns’ putback and again at 43-33 after the third behind a late push from Bentin Roberts.
Lance Runde hit a corner three to start the Bluejay fourth to make it 43-36, but then Hayden Sanders, who limped off the floor in the Stanberry game, played the whole game Tuesday and finished the fourth quarter with nine points. He started by knocking down a shot in the high post after Northeast had overextended on defense. Cole Ruby followed with a pair of free throws. Bentin Roberts cut it to 47-39 with a triple, but Hayden Sanders responded with a drive. Bentin Roberts did all he could on defense, taking a charge, but Worth County finally began to get separation after Ruby hit a 3-pointer.
Caleb New cut inside and Brock Healy flipped him an over-the-shoulder pass for two and Sanders added a pair of free throws to make it 56-39.
Bentin Roberts drove and scored to break the run, but Sanders knocked down a shot from the high post after getting a pass from Caleb New, Sanders added a free throw, Brock Healy finally got on the board after having been face-guarded all night by Bentin Roberts, and Dylan Smith hit Jordan Dannar for a drive.
Cole Ruby had 25, his most since coming back from an injury. Hayden Sanders and Caleb New had 14, Ryder Smyser 4, and Ethan Lininger, Brock Healy, and Jordan Dannar had 2 each.
Cole Ruby, Brock Healy, and Caleb New each had a blocked shot.
Caleb New matched a career high with 14 rebounds. Cole Ruby had 6, Hayden Sanders 5, Ryder Smyser 4, Brock Healy 3, Dylan Smith and Ethan Lininger 2, and Brock Healy 1.
Brock Healy had 5 assists. Ryder Smyser had 4, Hayden Sanders, Dylan Smith, Brock Healy, and Caleb New had 2, and Jordan Dannar had 1.
Caleb New had 9 tips. Brock Healy had 3, Ethan Lininger and Cole Ruby had 2, and Brock Healy and Ryder Smyser had 1.
Cole Ruby and Hayden Sanders had 4 steals. Brock Healy had 3, Ryder Smyser 2, and Caleb New and Ethan Lininger had 1 each.
For Northeast Nodaway, Bentin Roberts had 14, Lance Runde 10, Wyatt Scadden 8, Jace Burns 6, and Liam Cordell had 3.
