Four Hawks Reach Double Figures; Avery Gregg Narrowly Misses Triple Double

Four Gilman City players reached double figures Thursday night in Mormon Trail and Avery Gregg came within one assist of a triple double as Gilman City won 71-21 in a game that was moved to Mormon Trail’s old gym due to a gas leak. The change of scenery only seemed to benefit the Hawks, who play in one of the oldest gyms in the area.

The old Mormon Trail gym is one of the most unique courts around; it has two levels, pillars, and seats right next to the action. It was not quite the trip to Indiana to play in the Hoosiers gym that Maysville and OSHS recently took, but the gym had the same feel to it.

Avery Gregg played one of her best games as a Hawk, getting 12 points, 7 boards, 9 assists. 5 tips, and 10 steals. Khloey Sperry led the scoring with 19, Alli Burke had 18, and Hailey McClure also had 12. Paisley Taggart had 6 and Tenley Griffith 4.

The Saints showed some improvement from last year and were on a high note following a 60-27 win over Lamoni; however, they were young, with 9 players who are freshmen and sophomores and one junior listed. They had a pair of bigs who limited the Hawks on the boards, but they threw the ball away early and often, as Gilman City had 32 steals for the night.

Khloey Sperry started the scoring with a putback and then Sperry got a quick outlet to Avery Gregg, who threw it to Alli Burke for a triple. Emily Petty scooped up a carom and scored to put Mormon Trail on the board, but Khloey Sperry was hammered following an offensive glass and hit both free throws. Avery Gregg got a putback, Gregg aired out to Hailey McClure for two, and Alli Burke drove and scored to make it 14-2.

Gracyn Newton hit a pullup to make it 14-4, but Alli Burke hit her second triple of the quarter, Tenley Griffith got a putback, and then Tenley Griffith dove on the floor to get a steal, got it to Avery Gregg, who fed Hailey McClure for a finish. Hailey McClure got a steal and drive and then Alli Burke drove and scored to make it 25-6 after one.

The Mormon Trail coach was beside himself, doing the Chinese fire drill at one point, putting five in and taking five out.

Gilman City showed no sign of letting up to start the second, getting a putback from Khloey Sperry. Avery Gregg hit a 3-pointer following a Paisley Taggart steal, and then Avery followed with a steal and drive of her own, prompting another Chinese fire drill from Mormon Trail.  Northing worked at first as Sperry scored from inside off a pass from Avery Gregg, Avery hit Sperry again, Paisley Taggart knocked one down from the high post, and then Paisley Taggart scored off a steal to make it 39-6.

Mormon Trail finally put a run together as Alexa Graham went backdoor, Ellie Poush knocked one down from the high post, and skyscraper Jozie Parmer scored a three-point play off a lob to make it 39-13. But Paisley Taggart stopped the bleeding with two free throws and Avery Gregg grabbed an offensive board, dribbled into the corner, and hit a 3-pointer to make it 44-13, triggering the running clock for the second half.

The Hawks kept going in the third quarter as Khloey Sperry drove and scored to start the second half. Even their miscues turned to points as Avery Gregg lost the ball, only for Hailey McClure to steal it right back and score. Hailey got behind the defense and Avery Gregg got her the ball to make it 50-13.

Gracyn Newton drove and scored for Mormon Trail, but the avalanche continued as Alli Burke hit her third triple of the night. Tenley Griffith got a steal and fed Khloey Sperry for two, Khloey Sperry pushed one up the floor and found Griffith for two, and Khloey Sperry beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer, one of the few times the Hawks had trouble with the Iowa shot clock that night.

Parmer scored from inside, but Alli Burke scored off a drive and added a 3-pointer from the wing to make it 65-17 after three. Avery Gregg grabbed a putback and hit one from the baseline to make it 67-17.

Ellie Pouch scored four straight for the Saints to make it 67-21, but then some boys in the upper corner of the gym made the mistake of heckling the Hawks, and Hailey McClure exploded to the rim for two and Khloey Sperry scored from inside to account for the final score.

Khloey Sperry had 4 blocks as the Saints tried in vain to establish their bigs in the paint.

Khloey Sperry had 9 boards, Tenley Griffith and Avery Gregg 7 each, Hailey McClure 5, Alli Burke and Pyper Taggart 3 each, Paisley Taggart 1, and Eliza Alldredge 1.

Avery Gregg had 9 assists. Khloey Sperry had 4, Paisley Taggart 3, and Alli Burke and Tenley Griffith 1.

Khloey Sperry had 8 tips. Tenley Griffith had 7, Paisley Taggart 6, Avery Gregg 5, Hailey McClure 2, and Alli Burke and Pyper Taggart 1.

Avery Gregg had 10 steals. Paisley Taggart had 6, Tenley Griffith and Hailey McClure 5, and Khloey Sperry and Alli Burke 3 each.
