NN Renews Turpin’s Contract; Names Six Sub Teachers

The North Nodaway School Board, at their regular Board of Education Meeting Wednesday, voted to extend Superintendent Chris Turpin’s contract. This means that he will be under contract through the 2028-29 school year. The board also named six substitute teachers to the sub list. They are Grant Smail, Mitchell Day, Erica Wersching, Abigail Swink, Kaitlyn Saint, and Emma Hamilton.

There will be no election for the school district. Three candidates, Stan Alexander, Jennifer Clements, and Megan Roberts filed, and there were three positions open.

The board approved the first reading of the 2026-27 school calendar. The tentative first day of school will be August 24th. Thanksgiving break will be from November 25th through 29th. Christmas break will be from December 23rd through January 4th. Spring break will be from March 26th through 29th. Graduation will be May 16th. The last day of school will be May 18th. There will be 1112.3 total hours and 169 student days.

Elementary Principal Heather Townsend reported that they had several days where 5-6 faculty members and 10 students were out sick.

Mrs. Kirby held a PAT winter family connection night on January 13th where families enjoyed hot cocoa and STEM activities geared towards early childhood.

High School Principal Cody Jenkins reported that the attendance rate for students for the first semester was 95.24%. The class with the highest attendance rate was the eighth grade with a 96.51% attendance rate.

Students have been starting preparation for History Day as well as FBLA contest. There are two student teachers in the school teaching Ag and Art.

Courtwarming has been set for February 6th against Mound City. Coronation will take place after the boys game. There will be halftime performances all evening. The week’s theme will be Disney.

The last round of filming for Clayton Scott’s movie, “The Pastor,” was done on January 15th.

Superintendent Chris Turpin reported on the legislative activity in Jefferson City. There have been 2,700 bills filed and 100 of them on taxes. The MASA is watching over 500 bills that deal with education. Hot issues seem to be taxes and open enrollment.

The office space and restroom at the bus barn are nearly complete. The work is being done in-house with the help of some students.

The school is going to get propane bids out in the next couple of weeks.

Some of the buses got taken to St. Joseph for a recall notice. It is taking them three days to repair. Once the work is done, they will be placed back in service.
