Gilman City’s boys' and girls' teams swept Tri-County and Hale recently.
Against archrival Tri-County, the boys were mired in a losing streak after dropping a 56-40 loss to North Harrison. But they jumped out to a 15-11 lead after one quarter against the Mustangs. They were hanging by their fingernails to a 19-17 lead at the half, only to break the game open with a 17-4 third quarter to take a 36-21 lead after three. The Mustangs chipped away in the fourth but could never get closer than the final score.
Camden Griffith had 29 for the Hawks, Mason Preston had 11, Bennett Williams 3, Dakota Meringa 2, and Jace Estrada 2.
Hale had beaten the Hawks last year, and the teams came into the game with similar records. But this time, Gilman City put the game away early, jumping out to a 17-5 first quarter lead. They raised it to 38-12. They maintained their lead in the third, and the Hawks subbed freely in the fourth to close out the 59-41 win.
Camden Griffith had 25 points in three quarters of work. Mason Preston had 12, Alex Young had a career high with 10, Jace Estrada had 4, Bo Eads 3, and Chance Brown 2.
The girls did nothing to hurt their state ranking in either game. Against Tri-County, they jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one. The Mustangs chipped away and came to within 26-17 at the half, but Gilman City locked down on defense in the third, pulling away to a 41-18 third quarter lead and finishing with a 47-27 win.
Hailey McClure had the hot hand in the first quarter, knocking down two 3-pointers. Alli Burke knocked down two more in the period.
Avery Gregg had 16 for the Hawks in the game. Alli Bruke had 11, Khloey Sperry 10, Hailey McClure 8, and Paisley Taggart 2.
Against winless Hale, the Hawks jumped out to a 26-2 lead and led 45-5 at the half before pulling away to a 76-29 win. This was the most points the Hawks had scored in a game since the 2016-17 season, when they beat East Harrison 76-71.
Khloey Sperry had 23 points for the Hawks. Tenley Griffith had 14, a career high. Alli Burke had 11, Avery Gregg had 10, Paisley Taggart 8, Hailey McClure 6, and Pyper Taggart 4.
