Sheridan Had Communities Within a Community in 1891

In 1891, Sheridan had communities within a community. There were three such communities that had their own correspondent who wrote socials for the Sheridan Advance — Star of the West, Pleasant Valley, and Liberty. Each correspondent wrote under an assumed name.

Here is the entry from the Star of the West correspondent, “Hawkeye,” published in the April 16th, 1891 Sheridan Advance:

That was a fine rain the front end of the week which retarded oat showing somewhat.

“LaGrippe” has been in this section the past week. The victims are numerous; nearly every family being attacked. (Editor — This was a term for the Spanish Flu, which was widespread at the time)

Frank Stutesman has been confined to his bed for some time from LaGrippe.

Peter Fox is on the sick list, is somewhat better at this writing.

School begins at the Star of the West next Monday.

W.F. Clark was elected school director for the next three years at Tuesday’s election.

Sunday School was organized at the church last Sunday. W.H. Clark was elected superintendent, H.J. Hulse, assistant, Amanda Sell, secretary. Will meet at 9:00 am.

Items are scarce. Haystacks ditto. Will try and do better another time.
