The North Nodaway school board, at their regular meeting Wednesday, brought back Victor West as a teacher after he had taken retirement following the end of the last school year. The board also named Traci Westfall as the Root Ed Advisor for the school. Both votes were unanimous.
The board approved an agreement with Clayton Scott allowing the filming of “The Pastor” on school grounds between September 2025 and the end of February 2026.
The board approved the staff, bus driver, elementary, athletic, and high school handbooks for the upcoming school year.
The board voted to invest $1 million in funds in one-year CD’s at five different banks at $200,000 each for a full year in any bank that offers an interest rate higher than MOSIP’s liquid rate of 4.20%. The banks selected include Bank of China (NY), Solera National Bank of Lakewood (CO), Mission National Bank, San Francisco (CA), Farmers and Merchants Union Bank, Columbia (WI), and T Bank of Dallas (TX). The school is projected to gain $44,280 in interest from these investments over the next year.
The board voted to renew the Hallelujah Counseling contract for the 25-26 school year.
The school is in the process of applying for a 50/50 grant from the state for equipment for the ag program. The school is seeking an air compressor, a table saw, a string trimmer and blower kit, a metal shear, a cordless grinder, a framing nailer, a rolling tool box, a transfer pump kit, a nailer, and an air inflator kit.
The board set lunch prices for the new school year. Price for breakfast will be $2.20 for students, $2.80 for adults, and 30 cents for reduced lunch students. Lunch prices will be $3.30 for elementary, $3.50 for middle school and high school, $4.50 for adults, and 40 cents for reduced lunch. Extra milk will be 50 cents, seconds $2.25, a chef salad $4.50, sides $1.25, and orange juice 55 cents.
The board tabled the milk bid until a later date.
The school received three bids for the propane service. Agriland bid $1.138 per gallon. MFA Propane bid $1.19. Consumer Oil bid $1.239. The board awarded the bid to Agriland.
The board voted to accept the bid from Porter Trash for the trash service. Monthly fee will be $372, with $75 for the extra hopper and $75 for the recycling bin.
The board voted to accept the food bid from Gold Star Foods, formerly Graves Foods.
Elementary Principal Heather Townsend reported that the school had Kool Kats for the last day of school, along with grilled hot dogs and an awards assembly. The fifth graders did a promotion walk.
The school has been cleaning and doing touch-up painting for the next year. All teachers have enrolled for LETRS training for the next year.
High School Principal Cody Jenkins reported that several students have been attending summer athletic programs. Two students have been hired part time to help with renovations. Four students have participated in credit recovery or attendance makeup programs this summer.
All sports and activity schedules have been completed.
A foreign exchange student from Germany will be attending school for the first semester next year.
Superintendent Chris Turpin reported that the new desks have been delivered and installed.
Turpin met with the Pickering City Council. They plan to reapply for sign funding. The hope is to have more funding in place prior to reapplying.
Asphalting work is complete except for sealing and striping.
The gym refinishing will start June 25th. The work on the science room and stage floors will start July 14th. The new basketball hoops and volleyball sleeves will be put in July 14th.
The school will be audited on July 14th.
The next meeting will be held on June 30th at A&G in Maryville starting at 6 pm to finalize the budgets for this year and next.
