Keylee Smith Sparks U11 Tigers to 7-1 Win

Keylee Smith made three outstanding plays, one on the defensive side and two on the offensive side, as the under 11 Worth County squad, unbeaten after Thursday’s game, broke open the game in the third inning to beat Platte Valley 7-1.

Emerlee Clarkson and Hadley Downing combined on a no-hitter for the Tigers, with Clarkson pitching the first three innings and Hadley Downing finishing up the game.

Clarkson was helped in the first inning when Smith, playing catcher, picked a Platte Valley runner off first and started a rundown, getting her out. Hadley Downing made two plays on defense from shortstop in the first two innings to keep Platte Valley off the board.

Meanwhile, Gwynn Healy hit a one-out double in the Tiger first, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Emerlee Clarkson’s groundout to make it 1-0.

They added to their lead when Cree Blankenship and Alaina Moad walked and Hadley Downing was plunked. Gracee Frisch grounded out to the right fielder, but Blankenship crossed the plate to make it 2-0.

An error in the third let in the lone Platte Valley run, but Ellie Maudlin walked and took second and third on wild pitches to start the Tiger third. Gwynn Healy walked and stole second. Emerlee Clarkson singled them both home to make it 4-1. As the Platte Valley defense was not paying attention, Clarkson took second.

Keylee Smith hustled out a grounder to first and beat it as Clarkson scored from second and she stole second and took third on a wild pitch. She then made a daredevil play when Cree Blankenship hit a squib in front of the plate. Smith broke for home and made it as Blankenship got a scratch hit to make it 6-1. Alaina Moad grounded out to score Blankenship to make it 7-1.

Hadley Downing struck out three Platte Valley batters to finish the game. Downing and Clarkson combined to strike out nine batters.
